Jesus came down to earth with one mission, to seek and to save the lost. Amazingly, he called men to follow Him so that he could equip them to participate in His mission. He was not calling them to join an organization, embrace a strategy or to promote a brand. He was calling them to follow Him. Christ is still extending this call to you and me. Will you heed His call?

The church at Antioch was used by God to publish the Gospel far and wide into the Gentile world. It was planted as a result of persecution that drove believers from Jerusalem, the preaching of the Gospel to the Gentiles in Antioch and the power of God moving hearts to revive Jesus Christ by faith. The church at Jerusalem sent one of their most beloved members, Barnabas, to Antioch to edify the new believers in the faith. Their growth in Christ was so obvious that the people of Antioch began to call them Christians. Christlikeness marked their behavior even in the way they began to respond to needs and how they expressed generosity.

The church at Antioch in Syria was an amazing work of God. It was the result of persecution, preaching and the power of God. The reports of what God had done among the Gentiles in Antioch and the planting of a church quickly spread all the way back to Jerusalem. The believers at Jerusalem were eager to be involved in what God was doing and so they sent one of their most beloved members to encourage the believers in Antioch in their new faith. The immediate impact of their action was a new church was edified and because of that, the Gospel spread globally. Let’s continue to learn from the story of Antioch and ask God to help us in the same way.

The church in Antioch of Syria gained the reputation for sending out missionaries to the uttermost parts of the earth. This was the Apostle Paul’s sending church. Humanly speaking, without this church and their obedience to the great commission of Christ, Paul could not have made the status report to the church at Colossae (1:5-6) that the gospel was preached and having impact in all the world. This means that within twenty years of Pentecost, the early churches had obeyed the great commission. The believers at the church of Antioch played a significant role in the work of missions. As we begin mission weeks, lets consider the church at Antioch.
Where do you turn when life is unraveling? Last week we learned how Jeremiah was ministering to the people Judah, the southern kingdom, in the final 40 years before destruction and the captivity in Babylon (586bc). He faithfully preached the message God had revealed urging them to stop trusting in man and make the Lord their hope. A choice to trust in man would only bring a curse. The choice to make the Lord their hope would bring blessing. Only the desperate wickedness of their hearts would cause them to continue to trust in man. In the midst of this, Jeremiah pauses to reflect on who God is and seek Him in prayer.
