Grace Chapel Church of Christ

As the early church grew, those who were a part of all that happened were often filled with wonder and amazement. It was an exciting time! The people enjoyed the favor of all those they came in contact with. Until the persecution came. By Acts 8, the Church was enduring a great persecution. In John 11 Jesus tells the sisters of a friend who has just died that He is the resurrection and the life. He doesn't tell them that through His power He will bring new life and resurrection. He says He is life and resurrection! If we really understand what Jesus is saying, we can't help but be deeply impacted by this truth. Jesus tells us that if we know Him, we know Him we are already being changed from ones who have experienced death to those who are truly alive. In fact He says exactly this is John 17. In spite of our brokenness, and many times because of it, God chooses to use us to advance His Kingdom. As the apostle Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4, God has placed a treasure in us, even knowing we are fragile containers. We will make mistakes, but He has chosen us anyway- chosen us to show the world what mercy, peace, self-sacrifice, and true holiness look like. Last week as we looked at the first four beatitudes, we learned that God loves the humble, those who know they are truly broken and in need of Him. This week we see that He calls the broken into action. Our brokenness is not a call to resignation and defeat, but a call instead to lean into His strength and victory.

God is near to the broken. He is drawn to the humble. He comforts those who mourn and stands with those who are oppressed and downtrodden. He rejoices when we reach the end our the rope and acknowledge that we are helpless without Him. It is then, and only then, that we surrender ourselves to Him and accept His will for us. This is the message of the first four beatitudes in Matthew 5.

We are loved and pursued by a God who cares for us more than we can fathom. Our God is one who will leave behind the 99 to find the 1, because He is unwilling that any of His “little ones should perish,” (Matthew 18:14).
