God promises to give us Himself in Jesus.

1 John 5:13-21- God gives us a prayer he promises to answer.

1 John 5:6-12- We have the evidence we need to know the real Jesus.

From 1 John 5:1-5 we see that true and lasting victory is not achieved through our stiving but is alreay ours through faith in Jesus Christ. Being born of God transforms belief, love and obedience from duties into joyful evidence of a life secured in His victory over the world.

In these verses John not only calls us to love others,he also tells us that love for others comes from God, and how we can receive it from God.

In these verses John urges us to test the spirits to see if we are listening to false prophets, and gives us ways to discern whether what we are hearing is true or false.

This sermon describes how Christians can find unwavering assurance and confidence in their salvation, as explored in 1 John 3:19-24. It outlines how genuine love for others, faith in Jesus, and the sealing work of the Holy Spirit provide a rock-solid foundation, even when our hearts condemn us. The sermon explains how to trust God's perfect knowledge over personal feelings and outlines the freedom and confident prayer that comes from abiding in Christ.

John's burden for believers is that they abide in Christ throughout their lives so that they have assurance of eternal salvation and no reason to be ashamed when Jesus returns (1John 2:28). John teaches that those who abide in Christ practice righteousness. The reason they do so, is because abiding branches know God's love for them in Christ, have been transformed by God's Spirit through new birth, and are setting their hope on the glory coming to them when Jesus returns. By focusing in faith on God's past saving grace through Christ's saving work, the Spirit's ongoing work, and the grace coming to believers when Jesus returns, one will abide in Christ and enjoy assurance of eternal life with God!
