This week we come to the last of our Psalms for the Summer, Psalm 40. There are some profound truths embedded in it. I encourage you (as always) to read it in advance.

For instance, how do we fight our generation's characteristic sin (hint: it's the opposite of gratitude)? How do we properly thank God for His grace? What does God actually WANT from us? What does He demand from us, and the world?

Psalm 39 is one of David’s most honest laments, wrestling with suffering, personal restraint, the brevity of human life, and placing ultimate hope in God. We know that suffering is a part of living. No matter how hard we try to avoid it, no matter how much we invest in insurance and other “guarantees” suffering still finds us all. Now I am not talking about the flu or flat tires, I am talking about real pain that won’t quit or let up, real anguish of the inner person that occupies our every thought and never seems to leave. The kind of suffering I am talking about can come from outside or from inside us. It can even come from the disciplining hand of God. When the pain is too much to bear what do we do?

This week we come to a Psalm that is in the minor key. It's a lament about David's sin. It goes down, down . . . in order to go up, up. Forgetting God can leave us in a bad place. But there is a way of escape, which God provides for us in Christ.

While all the Psalms have their place and use, some have become pillars over the generations. Psalm 37 is one of those. It is unique, in that it gives as many commands as it does truth, and yet there are no prayers in it - no calling out to God.

Yet this Psalm was vitally important to David, as he faced malicious evildoers who pursued him and all the peaceful ones of the land. Psalm 37 is David preaching to himself the truth he needs for steady footing, as he faces wicked enemies. But because knows what HE needs to hear, he knows what WE need to hear, as we face enemies of the kingdom today, in modern California.

This week we return to the Psalms, this time Psalm 36. Here we find a crucial doctrine for not only why good people sometimes do bad things, and why the bad get worse, but also how we change. This lifelong project of transformation is not easy, but thankfully God does not make the path hard to find or difficult to understand. We grow by "beholding" Christ.

This week we will return to Psalm 33, to a passage that deserves more thought, on our country's 250th birthday. This will be another of what we call an "Artillery Sermon." The name comes from Scottish artillery companies, when they chose new officers. Because officers lead men into battle, it was an important decision, so they would ask a local pastor to preach a sermon before voting. Then "Artillery Sermon" came to describe any time a pastor spoke on important national matters. And there is nothing more important than considering just what is the source of our nation's blessing.

This week we consider one of my own favorite Psalms - I like it so much we plastered part of it on our wall. But to get the most out of it, I encourage you to read 1 Samuel 20:1-22:2. This historical background is crucial to understanding this beloved Psalm, and this blessed doctrine: that because God is perfect, He's not a perfectionist. But He is good - really, really good, to those who fear Him.

This week we move on to Psalm 33, which glorifies the steadfast love of God. The Hebrew word for this is "hesed," and it is perhaps the most important Hebrew word, except for the name of God. It is the ground of our hope, the fuel for our joy, and the rock upon which we can courageously build a life. And it was proven to use most vividly at Calvary.

Confession is a very misunderstood, yet important tool for people to use when trying to fellowship with God. It is misunderstood because it is usually driven by the culture’s agenda and not the biblical agenda. And it is important because without it we perish. In Psalm 32, David takes us through a master class on the proper way to confess/ repent our sin. He certainly understands the need for it. As both a murder and adultery, his personal experience carves out a clear and effective path for us to follow.
