There is something infinitely more important than the outward clothes we wear to church and that is what Paul discusses in this passage. “Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. But above all these things, put on love, which is the bond of perfection.”
V.12-13, Paul appeals to us as the elect of God. This is not something we can be proud of because God has chosen the weak, poor, and foolish ones of the world (1Cor.1:26-29). This is something to be humbled about. And God calls us holy! We are holy, not sinners! Believe what God says about you. You are holy and beloved. And so, put on tender mercies…” Longsuffering means to suffer long. We are to suffer long with others whom we have complaints against. Suffer long! And bear with one another. Bear means to endure whatever wrong others heap on you. Forgiveness is something we are all familiar with because we have been forgiven many times. There can be no relationship with anyone without forgiveness because we have all sinned.
We need to be careful here because it’s easy to say you do these things and with those words soothe your conscience, but then walk away from your church. Not saying there’s never a reason to leave a church, but after all this, why would you? One lady called me to say she was leaving the church and joining another church because she had been offended by some ladies. I told her I would not send her church letter to the other church until she first made things right with those ladies. She did, then she never left.
V.14, Love is what binds us together, it never separates us because love never fails. It’s so easy for people to say, “I love you… Goodbye!” That’s not love. I know about people who don’t do these things in v.12-13 and yet say, “I love you.” Verses 12-13 describe love. If you want to know what love is, read v.12-13.
