We return to David’s plight with Achish and his expectation for David to go out to fight with the Philistines. What will become of the LORD’s anointed as he is expected to go into battle against his own people—people that he is expected to one day lead?

The author of 1 Samuel left us with a cliffhanger at the end of chapter twenty-seven as we await to see David’s outcome with Achish and the Philistine army—would David commit treason or not? Chapter twenty-eight records Saul’s response to his own fear of the Philistines and his own unkingly behavior.

As we return to 1 Samuel we witness David and his behavior out of step with his role as the LORD’s anointed. As we see this divergent image of David when compared to the composite image previously established in this book, let’s consider what we can learn from David’s mistakes and rejoice in God’s providing us with perfect Anointed One who came to redeem us.

We are taking a one week break from our 1 Samuel series to hear from Ephesians 2:1-10.

His run-in and response to this foolish man named Nabal almost serve to derail his journey as God’s Anointed and future king of Israel. It shows us God’s providence in his using an unlikely source to avert the disaster that David was about to bring on himself.

David is still on the run in chapters 23 and 24 and his struggle appears far from over. Not only is he still on the run from Saul but he is also directed by God to save the people of Keilah from Philistine invaders. David’s trust in the Lord during these events appears to be foolish to the men around him. But it is a reminder to us of how faith in the living God often contradicts worldly wisdom.

Chapters 21 and 22 of 1st Samuel give us a view of the first events of David’s life as a fugitive of King Saul. There is nothing glamorous or attractive about the circumstances that David is going through but we can see God’s hand in all of it from our vantage point. Stories like these should bring us encouragement that God is always in control and will bring ultimate good through all events to his people.
