In the three parallel stanzas of this section, Micah contrasts the judgment of “now” with the salvation that’s coming later. He sees in remarkable detail the pending attacks of both Assyria and Babylon. But he sees something even more incredible: the birth of a future Shepherd-King who gathers a remnant and leads them into ways of peace.

Suddenly the judgment and doom of Micah 1-3 sees an abrupt reversal. The Lord has come back to Mount Zion and established himself as the Shepherd-King of righteousness, justice, mercy, and peace. The nations pour into Jerusalem to learn from the King, then they go to live and promote his ways.

The LORD now levels his indictment against the political, judicial, and spiritual leaders of his people, Israel. They’ve committed gross injustice and preached a false gospel in order to line their own pockets and maintain influence and control. But the day is coming when they will cry out to God, and God will not hear them. And even greater day is coming when a good and faithful Shepherd, a true Prophet and a just Judge, will make all things right.

Much of this chapter reveals God’s hatred of social injustice. When the powerful exploit and ruin the weak and the marginalized, God takes note. When they heap up “preachers” who condone their corruption, while tearing down those who stand up to them, God is righteously angry. But Micah’s first oracle (chapters 1-2) concludes with the portrait of a Shepherd-King who knows his own and comes to break them out of social and spiritual bondage.

Through Micah the prophet, the LORD summons the whole earth to watch as he comes down in cataclysmic judgment. But it’s not the pagan world he’s come to judge; rather, it’s his covenant people, Israel. Because they have practiced the same idolatries and sins as the surrounding nations, they will be the first to face judgment for their presumptuous rebellion.

The good news of the Gospel always has a "therefore." It true, the Gospel has profound implications for how we should live. If Jesus made the final and ultimate sacrifice to wash us clean and reconcile us to God, then we must come close. If he's faithful at all times, then we must continue in confidence. If he's reconciled us to one another, then we must consider our community and deliberately exhort and encourage others to live the Jesus life.

When our safety and security are threatened - not to mention our contentment or happiness - we naturally trust a whole host of things to functionally rescue us. Influential people and money are at the top of this list. Instead, we're called to trust God only and always.

When you're overwhelmed and exhausted, and feel far from God, call on him anyway. Trust him to be both a strong and compassionate refuge, ensuring your safety and salvation.

In the midst of a stunning defeat, David cries out to God to make sense of this setback. His complaint turns to confidence when he recalls the promises of God and remembers that he will be saved so long as the Lord is still standing.

When fear surrounds us, God is our shelter, our strength, and our song.
