  • The Extended Cut: Forbidden Favorites

In this episode of The Extended Cut, pastors Chris and Casey go behind the Sunday sermon and dig deeper into James 2:1–13, exploring favoritism, human dignity, mercy, and what it really means to love people like Jesus.Building on the message “Forbidden Favorites” from our church's Show Me Your Faith series, they wrestle with questions like: Does your relational world look like Jesus’? What does the way you treat people reveal about what you believe about Christ? How do we resist the world’s tendency to assign value based on status, influence, wealth, comfort, or usefulness? The conversation also explores how marriage, family, singleness, time, and responsibility shape the way we live on mission, why small acts of obedience matter, and how followers of Jesus can intentionally move toward people who are overlooked, isolated, or outside their normal social circles.Plus, in Beyond the Cut, Chris shares what he wishes he could have explored further in the sermon, including how James speaks not only to those tempted to look down on others, but also to those who have felt unseen, marginalized, or stripped of dignity. In this episode:- James 2:1–13 and the sin of partiality- Why “you cannot separate how you see Jesus from how you see people”- What it means for your relational world to look like Jesus’- Favoritism, status, wealth, influence, and human dignity- Mercy triumphing over judgment- Loving people who can do nothing for you- Following Jesus in marriage, family, and singleness- Practical ways to notice, welcome, and pursue overlooked people- Taking small steps of faith and obedienceThe Extended Cut is a weekly conversation from Grace City Church in Eugene, Oregon, where we go behind the Sunday sermon to explore what shaped it, wrestle with what didn’t make the message, and talk about what it means to actually follow Jesus in everyday life.Subscribe for weekly conversations on the Bible, Christian discipleship, spiritual formation, sermons, and life with Jesus.

  • Forbidden Favorites | Chris Zauner | Show Me Your Faith (Week 3)

What does our faith in Jesus reveal about the way we value and treat other people?

In Week 3 of our series, Show Me Your Faith, Pastor Chris Zauner teaches from James 2:1–13 in a message titled “Forbidden Favoritism.” James gives the church a direct command: followers of Jesus must not show partiality or assign greater value to people based on wealth, influence, appearance, status, background, or what they can offer us.

Favoritism may seem like a small issue, but Scripture calls it sin. When we begin viewing relationships through the lens of usefulness, influence, or personal benefit, people become opportunities to leverage instead of neighbors to love.

The gospel calls us to something radically different.

Jesus moved toward the people the world overlooked. He welcomed outsiders, touched the untouchable, dignified the dismissed, and extended mercy to people who had nothing to offer Him. And that same mercy is the reason any of us have a place at His table.

In this sermon, Pastor Chris challenges us to examine our own hearts and ask:

Who do I naturally notice—and who do I overlook?

Who do I move toward—and who do I avoid?

Do I value people based on what they can do for me?

Has the gospel actually changed the way I see the person in front of me?

James reminds us that genuine faith must change more than what we believe—it must transform how we live.

    Three truths guide this message:

    1. Reject the world’s way of valuing people.

People are not opportunities to leverage. They are neighbors to love.

    2. Remember what you have received.

Jesus welcomed us when we had nothing to offer Him. We did not earn our place at His table; we received it through grace.

    3. Reflect God’s mercy to everyone.

People who have received extraordinary mercy should become people who extend extraordinary mercy.

There are no VIPs at the foot of the cross. Our income, influence, accomplishments, social status, political identity, appearance, or connections do not determine our worth. Every person bears the image of God, and the ground at the foot of the cross is level.

James 2:8 says, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” And James closes this passage with a powerful reminder:

“Mercy triumphs over judgment.” — James 2:13

The question is not simply whether we understand that truth. The question is whether our lives demonstrate it.

Will we show our faith in who we welcome?

Will we show our faith in who receives our attention?

Will we show our faith by moving toward people who can do absolutely nothing for us?

May we become a church that sees the lonely, the overlooked, the successful, the struggling, the wealthy, the poor, the put-together, and the falling apart—and extends the mercy of Jesus to everyone.

  • Hear AND Do | Chris Zauner | Show Me Your Faith (Week 2)

What does it really mean to hear God’s Word?

In Week 2 of Show Me Your Faith, Pastor Chris teaches from James 1:19–27 and challenges us to move beyond simply hearing Scripture to actually living it.

James says, “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” It’s possible to know the Bible, take notes, attend church, and still walk away unchanged. Genuine faith receives God’s Word with humility, responds with obedience, and reveals itself through the way we live.

In this message, Pastor Chris challenges us to ask:

What is God saying to me?

    What needs to change?

What am I going to do about it?

We don’t obey to earn God’s love or salvation. We obey because of what Jesus has already done for us.

Receive the Word. Respond to the Word. Reveal the Word.

  • When Life Falls Apart | Chris Zauner | Show Me Your Faith (Week 1)

Week 1 of our new series, Show Me Your Faith, Pastor Chris Zauner begins our journey through the book of James by exploring one of the most challenging commands in Scripture: "Count it all joy when you meet trials of various kinds."

When life changes in an instant through loss, suffering, disappointment, or uncertainty, it's natural to ask questions like, "God, where are You?" and "Why is this happening?" In this message, Pastor Chris reminds us that these questions are not signs of weak faith—they're questions God's people have wrestled with throughout Scripture. More importantly, James shows us how to see our trials through the lens of God's unchanging character.

This sermon examines James 1:1-18, revealing that trials do not create our faith—they reveal it. Pressure exposes what we trust, strengthens steadfastness, and gives God the opportunity to shape us into the likeness of Christ. Rather than simply asking God to remove our hardships, we're invited to ask what He is producing in us through them.

You'll discover why James calls believers to rejoice in trials, how God uses suffering to mature our faith, why wisdom is more valuable than explanations, and how the gospel assures us that our pain is never wasted. Above all, this message points us to Jesus, whose perfect faithfulness through the greatest trial gives us hope in every season.

No matter what you're facing today, God has not abandoned you. He is still good, still faithful, and still at work. As we begin this series together, may your perspective be transformed, your faith strengthened, and your confidence rooted in the unchanging character of God.

  • How Does Real Change Happen? | Chris Zauner | The War Within (Week 4)

In Week 4 of The War Within, Pastor Chris Zauner teaches from John 15:1–17 about what real spiritual transformation looks like.

Change does not come from trying harder, relying on willpower, or managing our behavior. It comes from abiding in Jesus. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit apart from the vine, we cannot experience the life of Jesus while remaining disconnected from His presence.

This message explores why connection comes before production, why spiritual fruit is received rather than achieved, and how God uses pruning seasons to prepare us for greater fruitfulness. Pain is not always punishment, and struggle is not always evidence that God is distant. Sometimes the Father is forming something in us that we cannot yet see.

The answer to the war within is not greater self-reliance, but deeper dependence on Christ. Jesus is not calling us to become stronger on our own. He is calling us to come closer, remain in His love, and allow His life to flow through us.

Watch Week 4 of The War Within and discover how abiding in Jesus leads to lasting transformation from the inside out.

  • Why Do I Go Back? | Casey Olsen | The War Within (Week 3)

Why do we keep returning to the very things Jesus has set us free from? If the Holy Spirit is transforming us and sin no longer has the final word, why do old patterns, temptations, and desires still pull us back?

In Week 3 of our series, The War Within, Pastor Casey Olsen walks through 2 Peter 2:20–22 to explore one of the most honest questions every follower of Jesus faces. Looking at Peter's sobering image of a dog returning to its vomit, this message reveals that the deepest battle against sin is not merely about behavior but about the heart. Beneath every temptation is a deeper desire, and beneath every recurring struggle is the question of what we truly believe will give us life.

Drawing from James 1, Genesis 3, and the writings of Augustine, this sermon shows how temptation begins long before sinful actions. Our desires themselves are not the problem; the problem is when those desires become disordered and seek fulfillment apart from God. Rather than simply asking God to forgive our actions, we are invited to pray for something deeper: that He would purify our hearts, reorder our loves, and change the parts of us that still believe life can be found outside of Christ.

This message offers both conviction and hope. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, God is not only forgiving our sins but transforming our desires, reshaping our hearts, and making us into the people He created us to be. If you've ever struggled with recurring sin, shame, addiction, anxiety, bitterness, lust, control, or wondered why you keep falling into the same patterns, this sermon points you back to the life-changing grace of Jesus.

Ultimately, the gospel reminds us that our identity is not found in our failures or our deepest struggles. In Christ, we are made new, and the Holy Spirit is faithfully at work changing what we love so that our lives increasingly reflect the heart of Jesus.

  • Is Change Actually Possible? | Chris Zauner | The War Within (Week 2)

Is change actually possible, or are we destined to repeat the same struggles over and over again?

In Week 2 of The War Within, Pastor Chris Zauner teaches from Romans 8 and reveals the difference between trying to change through willpower and experiencing true transformation through the Holy Spirit. Christianity is not simply about behavior modification, trying harder, or becoming a stronger version of yourself. It is about depending on the Spirit of God who lives within every follower of Jesus.

Because of Christ, there is no condemnation. The verdict has already changed, the price has been paid, and you no longer have to fight for God’s acceptance. You can fight from it. God did not only forgive your sin; He gave you His Spirit.

This message is an invitation to stop relying on your own strength, surrender to the Holy Spirit, and trust that slow growth is still real growth. A long battle is not the same as a losing battle. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, and through His power, meaningful change is possible.

  • Why Do I Do What I Hate? | Chris Zauner | The War Within (Week 1)

Why do I keep doing the very thing I hate? In the first message of our new sermon series, The War Within, Pastor Chris Zauner opens Romans 7 to explore the internal battle every believer faces between the flesh and the Spirit.

In this sermon, Why Do I Do What I Hate?, Pastor Chris teaches that the Christian life is not free from struggle, but the struggle itself can be evidence that God is at work within us. Through Paul’s honest words in Romans 7, we are reminded that sin is not just a bad habit to manage but a tyrant Christ came to defeat.

This message speaks to anyone who has battled shame, temptation, failure, addiction, anger, lust, pride, comparison, or spiritual exhaustion. Pastor Chris explains the difference between conviction and condemnation, the limits of willpower, the purpose of God’s law, and the hope found only in Jesus Christ.

The war within is real, but it does not have the final word. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Jesus has the final word.

  • The Kind of Friends You Need | Casey Olsen | Why Can't We Be Friends? (Week 3)

In the third and final sermon of our series, Why Can't We Be Friends?, Pastor Casey Olsen shares a message called The Kind of Friends You Need, exploring how our friendships shape who we are becoming and how Christ-centered community helps us grow in faith.

Looking at Colossians 3:12–17, this message reminds us that we were made for friendship with God and with others, but not every friendship forms us in the same direction. Some relationships draw us closer to Jesus, while others can slowly pull us away. Pastor Casey challenges us to consider who has influence in our lives and whether our closest friendships are helping us become more compassionate, humble, patient, forgiving, loving, and rooted in God’s Word.

This sermon invites us to pursue friends who remind us who we are in Christ, tell us the truth in love, and continually bring us back to Jesus. But it also challenges us not only to look for these kinds of friends, but to become them.

If you’ve ever longed for deeper Christian friendship, meaningful community, or relationships that help you grow spiritually, this message will encourage and challenge you to take the first step.

Watch now and be reminded that the friendship of Jesus changes everything, and friendships shaped by Jesus can change lives too.
