The Christmas story is often treated as gentle and sentimental, but it emerges from a world marked by occupation, fear, and deep injustice. When Mary, Joseph, and Bethlehem are understood within the harsh realities of the Roman Empire, Matthew 1:18-25 reveals how power and exploitation shaped their lives and continue to shape our own world through violence, exclusion, and systemic harm, especially toward those pushed to the margins. Yet the story does not end there. It offers courage and hope, inviting people of faith to confront what is unloving, stand alongside those who suffer, and live into the transforming power of love.

In Isaiah 35:1-10, creation sings with abundant joy, blooming open like a crocus. What does it look like to delight in God’s goodness? How do we respond to God’s work in the world with joy? How can we be singers of joy? This passage in Isaiah paints a vision of hope to those held captive in exile. This particular image of the desert blooming is not only hopeful, but also abundant and joyful. How does joy sustain those who are broken and trapped in fear?

Isaiah 2:1-5 speaks of God’s promised day of hope, when wars end, swords are beaten into plowshares, and spears become pruning hooks. On the first Sunday of Advent, we focus on the need to hold onto hope and to continue dreaming of, and reaching for, the promised day when there will be peace and all will know love. How does unrelenting hope change us? How does it change our world? Isaiah envisions a world where warring nations convert their weapons into tools for flourishing. How might we live into this vision today? In the words of MLK Jr., “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”
