In the debit-credit, tit-for-tat, scratch-my-back-and-I’ll-scratch-yours world we inhabit we are always suspicious of anything free. In the story of the “prodigal son” Jesus reveals a God of such grace that we should be scandalized. Giving people things they don’t deserve is, well, bad business. God’s grace is, nevertheless, the business God is in and so, then, our business as well.
