Lead Us Not Into Temptation

This is week 8 of our sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer, called Teach Us to Pray, based upon the disciples’ request of Jesus in Luke 11:1.

Each week, we are taking a few minutes at the end of the sermon to explore different ways to reflect in prayer. This week, Pastor Robert encouraged us to pray in groups of 2 or 3 by simply sharing with one another which of these four categories we feel that we fall into right now, and praying on each other's behalf.

• I am experiencing a significant trial
• I am struggling to resist the many temptations around me
• I am questioning my identity and/or God's goodness.
• None of the above.

As We Forgive Those Who Trespass Against Us

This is week 7 of our sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer, called Teach Us to Pray, based upon the disciples’ request of Jesus in Luke 11:1.

Each week, we are taking a few minutes at the end of the sermon to explore different ways to reflect in prayer. This week, Pastor Robert encouraged us to pray by asking these three questions of God, and listening humbly to what His Spirit brings to mind as a response: 

• Is my life marked by gratitude towards you [God] or pettiness towards others?
• Where am I withholding forgiveness?
• How might I fix my eyes on things above?

Forgive Us Our Trespasses

This is week 6 of our sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer, called Teach Us to Pray, based upon the disciples’ request of Jesus in Luke 11:1.

Each week, we are taking a few minutes at the end of the sermon to explore different ways to reflect in prayer. This week, Pastor Brit led us in this simple prayer of accepting the forgiveness offered by Jesus, and encouraged us to pray for our friends or neighbors to find the same life and forgiveness as those who already believe in Jesus. 

"Lord Jesus Christ, I am sorry for the things I have done wrong in my life (take a few moments to ask his forgiveness for anything particular that is on your conscience). Please forgive me. I now turn from everything that I know is wrong.

Thank you that you died on the cross for me, so that I could be forgiven and set free. Thank you that you offer me forgiveness and the gift of your Spirit.

I now receive that gift. Please come into my life by your Holy Spirit to be with me forever. Thank you Lord Jesus, Amen."

Your Will Be Done on Earth as it is in Heaven

This is week 4 of our sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer, called Teach Us to Pray, based upon the disciples’ request of Jesus in Luke 11:1.

Each week, we are taking a few minutes at the end of the sermon to explore different ways to reflect in prayer. This week, we identified one area of need in our city (San Antonio) from a list of twelve, gathered in groups of two or three, and simply asked for the Lord to bring his will to bear on that area of need, including action on our own parts, if led into that.

Food Insecurity

Your Kingdom Come

This is week 3 of our sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer, called Teach Us to Pray, based upon the disciples’ request of Jesus in Luke 11:1.

Each week, we are taking a few minutes at the end of the sermon to explore different ways to reflect in prayer. This week, we used a simple journaling-prayer exercise. We wrote out 3-5 things that are significant to our personal identity other than that of Christian (mother/father, friend, neighbor, professional, athlete, etc.), and we asked God to reveal in us if there are areas of our identity which sometimes supersede our identity as Kingdom citizens, and how we can grow in submission to the true King. Hallowed Be Your Name

This is week 2 of a new sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer, called Teach Us to Pray, based upon the disciples’ request of Jesus in Luke 11:1. The late J. I. Packer commended the Lord’s Prayer as worthy of our attention in this way:

The Lord’s Prayer in particular is a marvel of compression, and full of meaning. It is a compendium of the gospel (Tertullian), a body of divinity (Thomas Watson), a rule of purpose as well as of petition, and thus a key to the whole business of living. What it means to be a Christian is nowhere clearer than here.

Like all good poetry, the Lord’s Prayer is chock full of meaning, allusions, and symbolism in every phrase. For the next several weeks, will be meditating on it, examining how other scriptures illuminate it, and asking the Holy Spirit to change us viscerally along the way.

Our Father, In Heaven

This week we have begun a new sermon series on the Lord’s Prayer, called Teach Us to Pray, based upon the disciples’ request of Jesus in Luke 11:1. The late J. I. Packer commended the Lord’s Prayer as worthy of our attention in this way:

This Sunday, we set aside time for healing prayer. Bishop Sandy Greene reminded us that God is our anchor of hope, and because we can trust in Him, and ultimately only Him, it is good and right for us to bring all of our needs to him in prayer. So, as a community, we did. 

There are many ways to pray for healing, and God is never limited by our particular practice. But this pattern of prayer has been fruitful in our community and we will continue modeling prayer practices which invite real and active work of the Holy Spirit while trying not to be unnecessarily dramatic or distractingly showy as we humbly receive and delight in His healing presence.

Matthew 5:13-16

At the beginning of each fall semester, we have a rhythm at Grace Northridge Anglican of highlighting places and means by which we hope those in our community will engage with and grow in the next year. The previous two Sundays highlighted Discipleship, including our kids moving up to their next grade level (August 11), and Serving within the walls of Grace (August 18).

This Sunday we set aside to highlight areas in which our church seeks to minister outside the walls of Grace, what is usually called "outreach" in ministry. Pastor Robert preached on the calling for christians to live this way, based upon Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5. He then talked about our four primary areas of outreach for this year at Grace.
