Overview: Does the sinfulness of people around you get you down- Do you find it difficult to remain zealous for Christ and His Kingdom- The day when Jesus preached to a multitude on a grassy hillside His second characteristic of the Christian was his mourning. The Holy Spirit's work in the Christian's heart is to give him such a love for God's glory and for righteousness that he mourns for sin in his own heart and life, in that of the Church, and in the world. But Jesus sets in parallel with this mourning a blessed hope with its attending rejoicing, -they shall see God-. It is to this that Paul exhorts you in verse 12. It is this that enables you to press on and not lose heart.

Depression, despair, and degradation are all around us in the world. Major West Coast cities are overwhelmed with used needles and human feces on their sidewalks. People are disfiguring their own bodies in the pursuit of being noticed and being accepted. Sin seems to be running along unchecked, and even professing Christians are largely ignorant of the Bible. How do you keep pressing on in the midst of such sin and its dehumanizing effect- What does Jesus require of you respecting your view of this world and your life in it- Paul knows what you are facing and he tells you how he lived in the midst of sin's degradation and the threat of his life for teaching about the glorious Savior Jesus Christ.

The Apostle Paul was a man unusually marked by diligence and fervency in serving the Lord. He gave up everything in order to bring the light of the gospel to men who were lost in darkness. Have you ever pondered the personal struggle that Paul experienced in keeping his heart for Jesus- He knew the arduousness of remaining diligent and fervent in the spirit. He also understood that you and I would struggle in the same way. So he comes alongside you and coaches you, -not to lag behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.- How are you doing in this struggle-
