Starting a Gospel, let alone the whole New Testament, with a long list of Hebrew names (Matthew 1:1-17) doesn't seem the most enticing way to get us to read on. That is, until we discover that this group of names is a sacred family tree, carved out over centuries, littered with kings and vagabonds, leading to the long-promised Messiah. Come and discover what this family tree tells us about the most important Person to ever walk this earth.

Paul began Ephesians by telling us that we are “seated with Christ in heavenly realms” (2:6). But those heavenly realms are a place of warfare against a vicious enemy who wants to destroy the church. We need to be aware of this struggle and use God's armour to stand our ground. Paul tells us how to do that.

This message invites us to see the heart of Jesus – a heart that overflows with justice and compassion for both the soul and the body. In the miracles of the loaves, we discover a God who provides not just enough, but abundantly, teaching us to trust His lavish care even when
resources seem scarce. Yet, like the disciples, we are often blind to His power at work within and around us. This is a call for us to open our eyes, yield to God’s transforming work, and let His justice and compassion flow through us to a world in need.

What is your “walk” like? The Hebrews used to use the word “walk” to describe the whole pattern of life. Paul wants us to assess our lifestyles and see if we “walk the talk.” Does your life reflect well on the gospel, demonstrating God’s love and purity, as well as attracting unbelievers to consider the gospel? Ephesians 5 shows us how to walk in the way of Christ.

Paul has given us a magnificent panorama of God's plan to bring together a new human race through the blood of Christ (Ephesians 1-3). But how can we live as God's people and fulfill His eternal plans in the muck and madness of daily life? Beginning in Ephesians 4:17, Paul becomes very practical, teaching us how to change our mindset until Christ is fully formed in us and we start to feel and act differently to the world around us.

Unity is tricky. The challenge of unity in a country like Canada is the common fact that everyone holds different beliefs. We don’t all think the same. The church is not immune either – we can struggle with unity, too. Paul, in Ephesians 4, makes a significant transition from the wealth of the believer in Christ to the walk of believers. Interestingly, he begins with unity as the marker of living a life worthy of the calling. What is unity? What is it not? And what is your part to play?

Happy Thanksgiving! This Sunday, there is much to be thankful for. And even more so as Christians, because we’ve received the gift of salvation, the gospel! The gospel is unlike any other gift. Most gifts are enjoyed for a season, and after a while, we can become bored, and we move on to something else. Other gifts wear out or expire. However, the Apostle Paul is convinced that the gospel is a gift that never wears out or expires. It is a gift that can be increasingly enjoyed for all eternity by all people! And as Paul prays that this ever-increasing enjoyment in the gospel would be a reality in the Ephesian church, he provides practical help for how it could be the same in Grandview Church.

This Sunday, we will be looking at Ephesians 3:1–13. This passage is focused on the mystery of the gospel, by which Jews and Gentiles become one body in Jesus Christ. Paul describes his own ministry of preaching this mystery and the role of the church in displaying this mystery to others. This passage calls us to reflect on the great message of God revealed to us and to live out the truth of the gospel in the church.

Some people know what it feels like to be left out, to sit on the sidelines, or to wonder if they truly belong. Ephesians 2:11–22 speaks directly to that ache. Paul reminds us that apart from Christ we were outsiders, separated from God, without hope, and without a place to call home. But through Jesus’ blood, everything has changed. Strangers become citizens, outsiders become family, and God Himself makes His home among us. On Sunday, let’s walk through this passage together and discover what it means to belong to God’s new human race in Christ.
