Jesus used the root word for exception in His teachings.  It is the word, "except."  When he used this word, he would identify a general rule, which would apply to MOST people and then revealed action that could be taken by those who would be an exception to the rule.

Nicodemus' desire to know what was true was greater than his fear of what he did not understand.  Jesus did not leave him guessing.  He made sure Nicodemus understood the new birth.
