Welcome back to Breaking Barriers for a series that I’ve titled Sing About Me. Yes, the title of this is a play on Kendrick Lamar’s song off of his critically acclaimed album Good Kid Maad City. For all my fellow Kendrick fans out there, I’m sure you probably (like myself) appreciate most about the song his dedication to sharing what’s real and the way that he does it through his art.
Similarly to what Kendrick does on his track, I wanted to metaphorically sing about issues that came up conversations with you guys following Why Does it Always Have to Be About Race and what I felt would properly set the tone for future episodes to come! You’ll see that this series functions like an onion, peeling back the layers of further marginalized black identities that need greater protection and support.
In this series we dive into issues of colorism, respectability and of course (one of my favorite topics) - criminality. I had the honor of working with bunch of amazingly smart and talented people who in some way are connected professionally and/or personally to the episode they were featured in. And we begin this series with a conversation on colorism. My hope is that we come away from this conversation with greater knowledge, empathy and even questions so that when its your time to sing about these issues you’ll be ready to have the hard conversations but with love.
