In October of 2018, Luna spent a week at a rented cabin north of Grand Marais, Minnesota, just off the Gunflint Trail. The cabin belonged to a man named Ed who had disappeared three years earlier. His son kept the place exactly as Ed left it, including a handwritten note on the kitchen table that said: 'If you find the anchor on the shore, do not touch it.' Luna found the anchor on the third night — a heavy iron ship's anchor half-buried in the gravel beach, its chain leading into the lake. She did not touch it. But the anchor began to move at night, dragging itself farther up the beach, and the water behind it seemed to grow darker. By the fifth night, the anchor was at the cabin door, and the lake had a shape in it, just below the surface, waiting.
