William Beaumont, namesake of the William Beaumont Hospital chain has a controversial and literally stomach-churning claim to fame. On this episode of Great Lakes Confidential, Mike simultaneously educates and nauseates Angie on the story of the Father of Gastric Physiology that began with an accidental gunshot wound on Mackinac Island.
And true to Mike's character, the music that closes us out is Gwar's Billy Bad Ass.

It's the rousing conclusion of the epic story of Mad Anthony Wayne, namesake of Wayne County, Michigan!
On this episode we'll cover why "keep your friends close, but your enemies closer" may not always be great advice, and how to make those Halloween witch cauldrons even creepier! Oh yeah, and there's a ghost story to wrap it all up!
We hope you enjoy and let us know on our social media what you thought about this special two part Great Lakes Confidential deep dive into the life and death of Revolutionary War hero and boozy adulterer Mad Anthony Wayne!
So much in the Metro Detroit area is named after Mad Anthony Wayne. We have Wayne County itself, even if punk rock retcon warriors would like you to believe it was named after New York punk pioneer Wayne (now Jayne) County. That’s actually the other way around. For some reason Texas born Wayne Rogers took their stage name from Wayne County, Michigan. Mad Anthony Wayne is also the namesake of Historic Fort Wayne in Detroit, as well as Wayne Road and even Wayne State University that has a statue honoring the Revolutionary War General.
But who was Mad Anthony Wayne and how did he get that super cool nickname? His story is so big it can’t be told in just one episode. This week we cover his childhood when he was just Little Grump Tony Wayne, and his life as one of the most effect American officers in the Revolutionary War and then his awkward transition after the war into civilian life. It’s a story that just snowballs with craziness!

Angie lets Mike take control of the helicopter throttle to talk about some of the movies that were shot in Michigan. Mike discusses the opening Detroit filming locations that were shot here and which ones weren't, but were supposed to be set here. He talks about all the second unit stunt filming used for the opening of Beverly Hills Cop, the one specific location used for the first two Evil Dead movie, how Marquette county was not only the location for the real murder in which the movie Anatomy of a Murder, but also where film auteur Otto Preminger chose to shoot, and how both It Follows and Gran Torino were shot entirely in Michigan. Plus, a little Clint Eastwood trivia never heard before!
