Today we continue the series discussing John Wooden's "Pyramid of Success." We are into building block #4, and the second of what Wooden called the "people blocks," Cooperation. I love that he finds relationships and people so critical to success that he has 3 blocks in the base of the pyramid devoted to them.
This one is devoted to what so many of you who are coaches are into in a big way - teamwork. You will hear a variety of quotes in today's episode, all focused on some aspect of the power and importance of cooperation and teamwork on the success of teams and organizations of all kinds. You will love those quotes, as they will be able to help you build cooperation and teamwork into the fabric of your teams.

Today is the second episode in the series on John Wooden's Pyramid of Success that I started a couple of weeks ago. Today we begin talking about the first cornerstone in the building blocks of the pyramid - "Industriousness." You will hear three different quotes in this episode, all three dealing with the concept of industriousness, hard work, and preparation.

Today is another one of our interview episodes, and you are in for a special treat. This is the first "non-athletic" world guest I have had on the episode, yet Clint Pulver packs a huge punch for all of us in both the athletic and non-athletic worlds.
Clint is a worldwide, motivational speaker and the founder of the "Undercover Millennial" project, which you will hear about in the episode. More importantly, you are going to hear how we as leaders can lead our teams in much more impactful ways that make team members love being part of our teams and want to perform to the best of their abilities for the team. You are also going to hear an extremely inspiring story that all teachers, coaches, and leaders of all types need to hear to help them understand the power and impact they can have when working with young people. Clint's story about Mr. Jensen and what he did for Clint is "Must-Listen-To" stuff!
Clint also has a new book coming out based on his work as the Undercover Millennial called, I Love It Here! You can order the book or reach out and connect with Clint to talk with him or book him to speak at your school, work, or organization at clintpulver.com or you can hit him up on Instagram or Facebook, as he is quite engaged on social media. I highly recommend you check out his site to see all of the amazing things Clint is doing!

Today we start a new series of quotes where I will be going through John Wooden's Pyramid of Success. Since my company and website are called SlamDunk Success, I thought it would be a good idea to do a series on the concept of success. I can think of no greater guide to success than Wooden's Pyramid of Success.
For the first two-thirds of my coaching career, I did not follow or study John Wooden nearly enough. In the last third of it, however, I have become a huge fan and fairly voracious student of his. I used the Pyramid of Success with my varsity basketball team in the 2011-12 season. We went through discussions of the different building blocks of the Pyramid throughout that season, which culminated in a trip to the state tournament, the first time a boys' basketball team at that school had made it to the state tournament since 1996. While I won't say that we made it to the tournament solely because we worked through the Pyramid of Success, I will say that it was a big part of our season, and I believe it guided us towards our success.
Today is an introduction to the series, and I talk about a few quotes that will really help lay the foundation for the series and for Wooden's ideas on success. In the coming weeks, I will cover each building block in the Pyramid and talk about quotes that support each of those blocks. I think you will find this to be a truly rewarding series.
To help guide me through this series, I am using the documents that I created for my team in 2011-12 to use for our discussions before and after practice, as well as the following books :
They Call Me Coach - John Wooden with Jack Tobin
Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success - John Wooden with Jay Carty
Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court - John Wooden with Steve Jamison

In today's episode, we are back to the interview type of format. I interview Coach Michael Massucci from Royal Oak, Michigan. Michael runs AEO Leadership. He has been a history teacher and basketball coach for many years, and he has been the educational coach for the the Michigan Elite 25 Basketball program for many years, as well.
Michael's books Elite Journey: A Young Man's Leadership Story and Elite Journey 2: The First Task of Leadership are excellent books that outline his ideas on leadership through the acronym ELITE and through a fictional story of a high school basketball player. I loved both books so much that I used elements of them as a guide for my first fiction book that came out last year, Ultimate Team Player. I highly recommend you check out Michael's books.
The quote that Michael discusses today is from Dr. Carol Dweck's outstanding book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. (That is another book I highly recommend you check out.) This quote gets at the heart of what motivates us, which is always important for teachers, coaches, parents, and leaders to be better able to help them improve at working with others.
You can reach Michael through his website, michaelmassucci.com, Twitter at @CoachMassucci or you can email him at [email protected].

Well, we did it. We have hit episode #50 of the Great Quotes for Coaches podcast! While I always felt that we would get here, it's still a nice little milestone to celebrate. Today's episode features a quote from cultural anthropologist, Margaret Mead. I thought that this quote would be a fitting quote for us on this milestone episode, and I think you'll understand why when you hear it.
Also, as my way of saying "Thanks" to all of you for listening, near the end of the episode you will hear information on how to enter a drawing to win a FREE paperback copy of my gift book for graduates, Inspiration for the Graduate, the book from which I got many of the quotes for these episodes.
Thanks to all of you for being on this journey with me. I appreciate all of you investing a little bit of time each week to listen. I don't take that investment lightly. I will try to continue to bring you quality episodes as we move forward with the next 50 episodes!

Today's podcast is another one where it is me talking about a quote that I like. Today's quote is another one from the "Leadership" section of my gift book for coaches to give to their graduating seniors called Inspiration for the Graduate. It is a quote by Duke University men's basketball coach, Mike Krzyzewski, known to most people as, Coach K. I believe I got the quote from Coach K's book, Leading with the Heart, one of my favorite books ever.
The quote is a great one for coaches to consider, not necessarily to use with their teams, but to use in terms of how they coach and lead their teams. The quote is this: “Great teams have multiple leaders, multiple voices. A major part of building a team is discovering who those voices will be and cultivating them, making sure that their leadership is established within your group.”
I love the concepts in this quote, and as you will hear in the episode, I haven't always followed them. I think many of us as coaches probably fail to do this at times. Listen in as I discuss why it is so important for us to follow Coach K's advice in this quote.

Today we have another interview episode of the podcast. I am talking with Lori Thomas. I know Lori because she is a fellow team member of mine with the Proactive Coaching team of speakers. But Lori is also a former coach, administrator with the NAIA, and the current Heart of America Conference Commissioner of NAIA schools.
Lori's quote today comes from one of the great leadership gurus, John Maxwell. It's kind of shocking to me that it took us 48 episodes to finally get a John Maxwell quote because he is so good and so quotable. You're going to love this quote, and you're going to love how Lori explains its impact on her and how she has used it with the coaches in her conference during this unprecedented time in our world.
You can connect with Lori at [email protected] you would like to continue the conversation.
