Today we start a new series. This one is on the concepts of Character and Integrity. The quotes will come from the chapter called "Character/Integrity" in my book Senior Salute.
Much like my book Inspiration for the Graduate was written for coaches to give to their graduating seniors, I wrote Senior Salute for coaches to give to their seniors on their Senior Night or at the End-of-Season Banquet. Both books focus on various team themes, and they are filled with quotes in support of those themes. You can get them at my website - www.greatresourcesforcoaches.com or on Amazon. (Senior Salute will be available on Amazon later this summer - 2020.)
Today's quote comes from W. Clement Stone. In fact, it is the same quote (with a couple of changes) that you heard in Episode 15. However, in 15, the focus of the quote was on Courage, the theme of the series that we just wrapped up. But today, there is another sentence that is in the quote that wasn't in the last one, and that is what makes it a quote dealing with integrity.
I thought it would be a good quote to be the bridge from the series on Courage to this series on Character and Integrity because it encapsulates both concepts all in this one quote. As always feel free to leave a review and let me know what you think!

Today's episode is the final episode in my mini-series on "Courage." If you didn't listen to the other episodes and you would like to listen to the series in its entirety, they began with episode 9.
This final quote on courage comes to us from President John F. Kennedy. "Being courageous requires no exceptional qualifications, no magic formula, no special combination of time, place, and circumstance. It is an opportunity that sooner or later is presented to us all."
I wanted to wrap up the series with this one because, ultimately, it challenges us. It tells us that we all have the ability to show courage when needed. It's just that we need to recognize the opportunity for it when it appears.
The question, though, is how will you react when the opportunity presents itself to you?

Today's quote comes from businessman and author from the 20th century, W. Clement Stone. He states, "Three daily reminders: Have the courage to say 'no.' Have the courage to face the truth. Have the courage to do the right thing because it is right."
So many good things to cover in this one, so rather than do that here, listen to the episode!

Today's episode actually contains two quotes. The reason I am doing two quotes here is that they are so closely related in concept and meaning that I thought I should just include them both and discuss them both at the same time.
The first one comes from the English author, Samuel Johnson. "Courage is reckoned the greatest of all virtues; because, unless a man has that virtue, he has no security for preserving any other."
The second quote is from another Englishman, Sir Winston Churchill. "Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees all the others."
Do you see the connection? Do you see why I chose these two to be paired together. Listen to the episode for my explanation and for why these are important quotes for us to use in our lives and with our teams and for us to model for others.

Today's quote comes to us from an anonymous source, but it is oh so good, and I think gets right to the heart of what actual courage is. "Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear." So often we think people who are courageous are "fearless." While some of them may be fearless, it is not fearlessness that makes one courageous. Most people who are courageous also have fears about what they are needing to show courage towards. It's just that they resist and then master that fear in order to do what needs to be done. So many great concepts in here for coaches, teachers, parents, and leaders of all types to work on instilling in their athletes, students, families, teams, and organizations.

Today we move into the 4th episode in our short series on "Courage." Today's quote comes from the wise Chinese philosopher, Confucius. I have loved so many quotes by Confucius, but I'll admit, this one has always made me a little uncomfortable. I often feel he is hitting me upside the head with this one, reminding me that I need to behave this way more in my life. "To see what is right and not to do it, is a lack of courage." And while I try to live by this concept as much as possible, I know I have fallen short at various times in my life, and I am ashamed of that.
These quotes are all from my gift book for graduating seniors called, Inspiration for the Graduate. In the book I have 10 different "Team Themes" that I used with my teams through the years, as well as a variety of quotes in support of those themes. I also set up the first page for coaches to write their own personal note to the graduate. If you are interested in finding out more about the book, go to my website, Great Resources for Coaches and scroll down the page.

Today is the third episode in a short series we are doing on "Courage." This quote is from President Andrew Jackson. While he is a controversial figure in our history due to his treatment of Native Americans (Trail of Tears), this quote is an excellent quote about the power that one person with courage carries in a group. "One man with courage makes a majority."

Today's quote continues our series on "Courage" that we started last time in Episode 9. This quote comes to us from an author that many of us probably have not heard of - Mary Anne Radmacher. She is not a household name like Dickens or Twain, but she is a very popular author in her own genre, and she has had her share of quotes. This quote of hers is one I have always loved: "Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow."

Today's podcast kicks off a mini-series of podcasts dealing with the theme of Courage. During this extremely difficult time when we are fighting the Coronavirus pandemic, people all over the world are showing great courage every day. Doctors, nurses, police, and first responders are all risking their lives every day to try to save others. So the theme of courage was on my mind as I looked through my gift book for graduating senior athletes called, Inspiration for the Graduate. I found so many good quotes in the chapter on courage that I decided I needed to do more than just one episode on courage. It's fitting, though, as people all over the world deserve our attention for the courage they are displaying.
The quote I start off with is one of my favorites on the concept of courage. Although the courage in this quote is not a go-to-war or battle-a-pandemic kind of courage, it is still a courage nonetheless. The quote is by a French author named Andre Gide. You have probably seen it on motivational posters and calendars before. "Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore."
I love how this quote talks about the kind of courage that people show everyday by stepping out of their comfort zones and trying new things. The courage it takes to attack a new venture, ask someone out on a date, start a new job, ask a boss for a raise, and so many more things are the types of courage that are at the heart of this quote. This is a kind of courage that is not as big and bold as saving lives, but in many ways is just as important. Because if you are not willing to step out of your comfort zone and go for the things you truly want in life, are you really living your life to its fullest?

Today's quote comes from a source that is shrouded in a mild bit of controversy. Various people have been attributed as the one who said it first, from Henry Ford to Jessie Potter to Moms Mabley and others. No matter who said it first, it has stood the test of time because it is so meaningful. "If you always do what you've always done, you will get what you've always gotten."
