A Worthwhile Read...and That's a Fact

Charlotte Rae's "The Facts of My Life" is a very thorough and insightful autobiography. Beginning with her childhood and descriptions of the family dynamics (and ancestry) that helped her (and sometimes hindered her) in her performing aspirations as a youngster, the book goes through over 80 years of a remarkable life. Reading about Charlotte's early experiences in theatre, on Broadway, and living in New York in general is most fascinating. She is also very poignant in relaying the personal turbulence of her disabled son Andy's life, as well as her own parallel struggles with health and alcohol through the years of her marriage and afterward.

The only weak link in this book is that Charlotte's coverage of her time on "The Facts of Life" is shorter than one might expect, given that it is still her biggest claim to fame (and pretty much, the name of the autobiography!). I understand that this is her story, so she probably didn't want to go very far into things on the set concerning others. But I do think a little bit more detail would've been warranted regarding the progression of the series over her seven years on it. Still, I have the utmost respect for Charlotte's body of work as a whole, and consistently enjoyed reading about the many chapters and facets of her life.

Highly recommended!

Charlotte Rae has led a fascinating life, and I have newfound respect and admiration for her, as both a person and an entertainer, after reading her autobiography. This book is engaging and is written in a conversational style - it almost feels as if you're sitting and chatting with Ms. Rae. In addition to the details of her own life, she also shares many interesting anecdotes and insights about mid-century Broadway and Hollywood shows, actors, etc. The only downside, if there is one, is that despite the book's title, and the fact that Charlotte Rae is perhaps most widely known today for her role as Mrs. Garrett on "The Facts of Life", she didn't seem to spend as much time discussing that particular show, her co-stars, etc. as I'd hoped. That said, when you read that chapter, you'll understand why.

A Great Actress & Great Person

I of course knew Charlotte Rae from Different Strokes and The Facts Of Life But she is so much more than that. Now in her 90âs she has a career that goes back to the Golden Age of television as well as a wide variety of work in film and on stage. Like all of us her life has had many highs and lows. But she has made it through them all with a determined will and still has a positive outlook. She is an inspiring woman with an amazing story. So much heart and warmth. A truly beautiful person.

An excellent show-biz biography. Ms. Rae has a fascinating story and knows how to tell it. She is, in fact, an excellent writer and an amazing woman. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Anyone who knows âThe Facts of Lifeâ remembers the iconic Mrs. Garrett played by Charlotte Rae. I never really knew much about her as she was mostly was popular for being on NY stages before widespread fame in the 80âs. In her autobiography, Charlotte keeps the focus on her and gives very little details on the Facts of Life or that era.

The Memoir is a wonderful story of strength, survival and moving beyond the pain. This book is anyone who has or is in an abusive relationship It gives much needed hope. For those of us who are gifted with healthy relationships, this story should remind you of how precious those people in you life truly are.

Incredible journey

The story is a journey into the torment and abuse of a women from childhood through adulthood. At times it brought me to tears as I traveled with her in her pain. There is something about the times when abuse was not spoke of, hidden and in some cases accepted as a mans rights over his family. Coming from an abusive background much of this was hard to listen to. Traumatic to listen to and greatly accurate as to how few people step up to help children back in that time frame. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Amazing insight, great narrative, but one issue...

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The struggle I had with the narrator was the way he changed his voice when quoting women in the book. It was squeally and high pitched. Their voices obviously didn't sound like that and using the change in tone gave it a rather disrespectful air and became quite annoying to listen to after a while.

Sarcastic, Honest, and -- Dare I Say -- Full of Heart

Dan Martin's debut novel is a biting, comical look at the expectations vs. realities of his early military career from the sexual misadventures (just ... so many sexual misadventures) to the less than glamorous military missions. While the book's dark humor makes it a hilarious read, what stood out to me as a reader was the evolution of Dan himself. His critical look at his 20-year-old self is both caring and honest. He doesn't shy away from talking about rehab or suffering from debt which made me feel more invested in his story. But it was the end that I found the most thoughtful. Dan's final chapter reminded me that life is not just one adventure, it's many choices, many missions, perhaps even more than one marriage -- but it's within your power to cure your own boredom.

I found myself giggling aloud while reading this on the subway and would recommend it to all the nonfiction lovers out there.

Adventures with Dan!!!

A great read, Dan tells about his demons before and after rehab and then enlists in the Air Force. With no real aircraft to train on the training becomes less than optimal. He tells stories about his adventures with other members of his unit and his travels around the world. He faces many of life's problems that we all do as we get out on our own away from family and find ourselves. A great read!

Breezy, fun trip into the absurdity of life, not just military life.

If you enjoy writers like David Sedaris, you will love this book. It's a breezy, fun, enlightened look at the absurdity of life, not just of military life. I was done reading before I even realized it. Genuinely funny with real heart, very strong debut book for the author. Can't wait to see what he delivers next.

Planes, girls and the promise of exotic lands!

This is a good read about the struggles we have going thru life and trying to find our place in it.The Air Force and the goofballs in it are a great back drop for the story. It's fun insightful and you may learn something from it. I did.

Just a brilliant book that brings the reality of life to the reality of economic theory.

I would recommend this to anyone wanting to understand economics and understand how the financial system operates.

It provides a clear summary of the failings of the systems, but also the opportunities the systems could provide through honesty and hard work.

Waffle Street should be a text for sophomore university students in economics

I read this book right after getting my own pink slip from my corporate job at Fort Benning. It cheered me up and kept me entertained through all of its almost 300 pages. I'm surprised it is not a "runaway best seller". Of course it is not a comprehensive treatise on economics and tax policies are hardly mentioned but it gives one real insight into how reckless financiers, nerdy bankers, and Wall Street wizards reason through their unsound economic worldview and overlook rock solid economic law. The humorous Waffle House anecdotes sometimes have subtle economic lessons of their own. Plus the book has the drama of an almost Robinson Crusoe quality as the white-collar man finds himself awkwardly trying to call out food orders correctly under pressure in a swirling blue-collar sea.

Economics Made Simple!

A wonderful and SIMPLE to understand education in economics told through the authors own experience in acquiring deeper understanding of his own discipline of expertise ... in a Waffle House. I saw the movie made from the book on Netflix and was intrigued. hey are nowhere near the same. The movie explores more of the human interest aspect and the book delves deeper into the underlying economics and the authors revelations.

Well-written and interesting premise

This book just isn't for me. Once he got the job at the Waffle House, I lost interest. The writing is good, and I like his style. But I just couldn't stay interested. But I'm not a business guy, or one for nonfiction. I do recommend this for people who are, as I think it's an interesting premise and well-written. It's just not my cup of tea.

A fun personal story and useful reference guide

I did study a little economics at school and despite (because of?) this, I wouldn't claim a strong grasp on economic fundamentals.

Martin Moran's personal and moving story is written and performed with heartfelt insight, and honest humor. (I did, in fact, laugh out loud at his knowing asides.)

By bravely speaking of his personal life, his observations--and questions--about rage, remorse and forgiveness in our social and political world, engage the listener. Neither a sad nor angry tale, but an entertaining and informative exploration into "What if ..." and "How would ...". (With a sprinkling of showbiz too.)

It is quite amazing that at such an early age she had the ...

Just as the subtitle says, âThe Downs and Ups. . . .â, the author has been able to turn many of the adversities of her early life into inspiring positive ones. It is quite amazing that at such an early age she had the strength of character to disassociate herself from repeating objectionable comments even when she was too young to really understand that many were actually vulgar. She instead chose words which were more peaceful and less aggressive. She apparently was born with a special gift to see life in a much more positive way--a trait which would carry her through to a very successful professional career and a wonderful family life.

I had the profound good fortune of having Pauline as a supervisor for a few short years and found her to be the most compassionate, fair, smart and hard-working supervisor one could hope to have.

Her memoir is a testament of how important it was for her to give her family such a remarkable accounting of her life and their ancestry. She is so lucky to have had so many wonderful family members and friends (thank you, Georgia, and those wonderful friends who gave Pauline, Tina and Dean a way to travel to America) in her life, and they in turn are so lucky for having her in their lives too.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this well written book.

I loved your book. How did I not know you? I went to Croyland Road school, my grandmother lived at 72 Mannock Road. You were a year younger than I. I went to school with Avril and Veronica Tapp, lived in the Kingsway Estate, even worked at Whitworths for 2 years 1959 an 60. Doctor Carpenter was also our doctor. I recently read Susan Jackson's 'The Other Side of The Crescent' which I adored. My sister went to John Lea school and was your age , her name was Sandra Bent. I Loved It!!

I finished "Fudge" over the weekend, and wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it. It was very well-written -- terrific reading, stories unfolding with just enough information at the right times. I was amazed at what this beautiful woman endured. Pauline is a testament to the fact that one can rise above their circumstances and achieve their dreams. This book was hard to put down. I was very touched by it. I wanted more!

Brutally honest

This is an autobiography (short), not a comedy sketch. There are a few jokes sparsely spread throughout the book but it is, for the most part, serious.

I think the performance is fantastic only if you have heard her stand-up shows. She wants you to know this is serious and not a joke and her tone reflects this.
