    Unsung hero
You hear so much about Peary but so little about Matthew Henson. This book gives some much needed insight into a story that should be told.
    Excellent book. Fascinating.
Excellent book. Excellent story. I recommend it to everyone. A wonderful part of our history.
Wonderful piece of history and an interesting human being story
Wonderful piece of history and an interesting human being story. It shows the strength and intergrity from all angles of our great nation's past.
Well written look at Cook and the Pole
Matthew Henson 's account of the Peary expeditions to the North Pole is a fascinating look by a man who was by Peary's side for over twenty years.
The description is good, as well as the details he gives about the day to day life of the explorers. What fascinates me is the way all of the explorers talk about their dogs. Many of the dogs take on a stronger personality than the explorers themselves.
    It's a short, informative read.

Title: From Peanuts to the Pressbox
Subtitle: Insider Sports Stories from a Life Behind the Mic
    Author: Eli Gold
    Narrator: Eli Gold
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 4 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-12-17
    Publisher: Eli Gold
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In this behind-the-scenes look at sports broadcasting, Eli Gold tells how a kid from Brooklyn, New York, went from selling peanuts at Madison Square Garden to being one of the most recognizable voices in all of radio sports broadcasting.
From Peanuts to the Pressbox is an intimate walk down memory lane, reliving some of the greatest moments in University Of Alabama sports (football and basketball), NHL hockey, and NASCAR. Gold also shares stories from his early days with Yankees broadcasters Mel Allen and Red Barber and other broadcasting greats, such as Bob Costas, Tom Hammond, Verne Lundquist, Kevin Harlan, Ron Franklin, and Mike Tirico.
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent broadcaster
I have only skimmed through the book. However, Eli Gold is an excellent play-by-play broadcaster & I plan on reading it.
    good story
This was a good book to learn about how a boy from the Bronx grew up to be an announcer for Nascar and Alabama football. Very interesting and informative story. I would recommend this book even if you are not an Alabama football fan.
    Five Stars
GREAT BOOK. bOUGHT TWO OF THEM ONE FOR ME AND ONE FOR A FRIEND.
    A Love of the Game
You may wonder why an avowed Tennessee fan would read a book written by the radio voice of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
I have to admit I wondered that a few times myself, especially as I got into the chapters in which Eli Gold talks about working for the Crimson Tide.
But beyond the loyalty and love of one school over the other, there's something more to "From Peanuts to the Pressbox." The book is the journey of Gold from a young boy who loved sports and always wanted to get into the broadcasting side of the sport game as he worked hard, followed his dreams and learned the ropes.
And while there may be time the prose suffers a bit (Gold relies too much on exclamation points in the book), the enthusiasm and love for what he does always shines through. In many ways, this book is the embodiment of the old adage "If you do something you love, you'll never work a day in your life." Gold clearly has that love as the voice for just about every sport in the world and it comes through in his stories, recollections and memories.
All in all, a fine book
Recently, as part of the Thomas Nelson Blogger Reviewer Program, I received a copy of Eli Gold's "From Peanuts to the Pressbox: Insider Sports Stories from a Life Behind the Mic". The work is an autobiography looking back at the life of a kid from NYC who skipped most of high school to watching sporting events that found himself in the right place in the right time many times over who advanced up the ranks of sportcasting.
I give the work three stars. It was an easy read; something to read while trying to fall asleep at night. For me, a sign of a great autobiography is one that the subject shares not only the events of his life, but why those events were important enough to recall as well as the lessons learned. Overall, this work is a feel-good retelling of Eli's favorite stories, without much added depth.
Eli's work has been overall contained to hockey, NASCAR, Alabama football and basketball. If you're familiar with any of these sports, there will be many stories that will be quite enjoyable and fun to read.

    Publisher's Summary:
"I have often met with happiness after some imprudent step which ought to have brought ruin upon me, and although passing a vote of censure upon myself I would thank God for his mercy." - Casanova
Contrary to how the libidinous legend is often seen through the rose-tinted lenses of Hollywood, the real Giacomo Casanova did not have Heath Ledger's strong, chiseled jaw or the piercing, lagoon-blue eyes of Richard Chamberlain. Rather, portraits of the actual Casanova show a plain, somewhat forgettable face, with a doughy jaw, a prominent, faintly crooked nose, and close-set, protruding eyes. In essence, while he was certainly not unattractive, he was far from someone who would be envisioned as synonymous with womanizing. Nonetheless, Casanova engaged in hundreds of trysts, and whatever the man lacked in aesthetic appeal, he indisputably made up for in charm, mystique, and raw, animal magnetism. He was also quite matter of fact about it all: "Real love is the love that sometimes arises after sensual pleasure: if it does, it is immortal; the other kind inevitably goes stale, for it lies in mere fantasy."
Indeed, the fabled erotic exploits of the captivating, charismatic Casanova were so spectacular that his surname has been immortalized with its own entry in Merriam-Webster, among many other reputable dictionaries - "a lover, especially, a man who is a promiscuous and unscrupulous lover." Though Casanova has been cemented in pop culture, above all else, as a silver-tongued, licentious lover, the man was scintillatingly gift-wrapped with layers of artful deceit, vigilant calculation, and an inextinguishable hankering for adventure. He donned many hats, yet each one seemed to be styled especially for him.

An ugly man inside and out
Casanova: The Adventurous Life and Legacy of the Worldâs Most Famous Womanizer by Charles River Editors is a story that totally surprised me. This is not what I thought this man would be. I thought of him as a charming and sweet person what would win women over with his charm. Part of this may be true to a point but his was also a terrible person that did horrible things to people and called them pranks. This pranks were well known and despised. One time he stole a man's girl when they they were out and took the girl to a room. Him and three other men got roaring drunk and then each had there way with her. Of course his version was that she agreed with it. Their word against hers. They returned her then to the man. These are the pranks he is known for. A prostitute once said he raped her but he said he gave her money but she didn't want to sleep with him so he used a broom handle instead of his penis. He said he couldn't have 'raped' her. He used prostitutes a lot. He was not good looking at all and he was just as ugly if not more on the inside. I think being called a Casanova should be considered a real insult.
A concise history not particularly graphic history of Casanovaâs life
The e-book about Casanova: The Adventurous Life and Legacy of the Worldâs Most Famous Womanizer was certainly interesting. I thought he was primarily a womanizer who seduced many women well according to the book he also seduced males. If he were alive now, he would probably be in jail for both rape and statutory rape.

Former soldier Rob Langdon was working as a security contractor in Afghanistan when he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death in a case that would have been ruled a clear miscarriage of justice in the British legal system. His sentence was commuted to 20 years in jail, and he served his time in Kabul's most notorious prison, Pul-e-Charkhi, described as the world's worst place to be a Westerner.
Rob was there for seven years, the longest sentence served by a Westerner since the fall of the Taliban, and every one of those 2,500 days was an act of extraordinary survival in a jail filled with Afghanistan's most dangerous extremists and murderers. In 2016 Robert was pardoned and returned to Australia. In this highly anticipated audiobook, he will talk about his experiences for the first time.

A Great Story of Overcoming Challenges in Life
Would you listen to Little Big Steps again? Why?
I cried. I laughed. And I cried again, but tears of joy. This story is one of perseverance in the face of enormous adversity. While this story focuses on Arash's difficulties living a life with a body he doesn't recognize as his own, the lessons are tangible for everyone. While we hope to never need the mental fortitude shown by Arash, we all have challenges we must overcome during our lifetimes. The power of this narrative is that those challenges can be overcome by focusing on small progress and that, by doing so, the larger goal can be accomplished.
What did you like best about this story?
I absolutely enjoyed the detail of Arash's proposal to his girlfriend.
Which character as performed by Arash Bayatmakou was your favorite?
    Arash, of course
    A story worth reading
I was engaged from the start. A life changing injury can happen to anyone. Hearing how Arash navigated the medical care system, the importance of the words people use, and the experience of insensitive caregivers, is so important for all to hear. I was so moved by his honesty and persistence, and by the role his parents and friends played in his healing journey from a tragic accident. He is an inspiration to anyone who finds themselves unable to live their life as they once had. Its a book for people of all ages, and hopefully medical professionals will learn from it as well.
    A PROFOUND EMOTIONAL JOURNEY
Where does Little Big Steps rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I stumbled across Little Big Steps and it blew my mind. It was at times heartbreaking, inspiring, and funny... but always honest. It's definitely in my top five audiobooks of all time.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked its authenticity. This wasn't about looking back, but observations from within. Arash experienced an utterly life-changing event... and takes us through his emotional and physical journey in an immensely visceral way,
What about Arash Bayatmakous performance did you like?
It's him... it's his voice, his emotions, raw and unfiltered.
inspiring, masterful work! A must read!
Couldn't stop listening from the moment I started it. Arash is a very inspiring person whose story inspired me not to take everything for granted. I learned from his spirit and dedication.

    Publisher's Summary:
Donna Solecka Urbikas grew up in the Midwest during the golden years of the American century. But her Polish-born mother and half sister had endured dehumanizing conditions during World War II, as slave laborers in Siberia. War and exile created a profound bond between mother and older daughter, one that Donna would struggle to find with either of them.
1940, Janina Slarzynska and her five-year-old daughter Mira were taken by Soviet secret police (NKVD) from their small family farm in eastern Poland and sent to Siberia with hundreds of thousands of others. So began their odyssey of hunger, disease, cunning survival, desperate escape across a continent, and new love amidst terrible circumstances.
But in the 1950s, baby boomer Donna yearns for a normal American family while Janina and Mira are haunted by the past. In this unforgettable memoir, Donna recounts her family history and her own survivors story, finally understanding the damaged mother who had saved her sister.

Superb Title and What an Odyssey!
Donna Solecka Urbikas has masterfully captured the incessant stories of the exile and journeys during WWII and following years shared by her mother who seemed obsessed with making it known what had happened to her and her daughter Mira. The story blends the stories, later recorded memories of her mother and sister, bits of history of eastern Poland that Russia invaded in late 1939, the exile to work camps, life in refugee camps in so many countries, and rescue by a young Polish officer with a separation and reconnecting. The story and the distances covered by Janina and Mira offers insight to what happened to some of the Polish Catholics. The youngest daughter had the advantages of growing up and learning in American schools and witnessing the strong bond between the much older sister and mother with links to another world and time that the stories were insufficient to complete emotional bonds.
With education, travel, employment, marriage and becoming a mother, the author encounters family illnesses and various issues that have lead to a better understanding and an emotional journey to write this excellent book that has been in the works for nearly 30 years.
While I normally have had problems with books or movies that skip back and forth in time, the author has struck a really good balance with this style that seems to help with the character development and weaving herself into the story for the full impact of what WWII did to the lives of the people living then and the ones to follow.
The narrator is phenomenal for this book. I hope people will visit the author's web site for more information.

    Title: Life Detonated
Subtitle: The True Story of a Widow and a Hijacker
    Author: Kathleen Murray Moran
    Narrator: Coleen Marlo
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 6 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-10-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 4 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Watching the towers crumble, few remembered America had been attacked on 9/11, once before. Kathleen Murray Moran's own September 11th 25 years earlier occurred when her husband Brian, a member of the New York City Bomb Squad was killed defusing a bomb Croatian freedom-fighters placed in a Grand Central Station locker before hijacking TWA flight 355 from La Guardia airport.
Life Detonated is the story of how that bomb ripped through Kathleen's life, the life she had so carefully created after spending her childhood in a bug-infested basement of a Bronx tenement, one of eight children, where the door was left open to drug dealers and pimps, until she was saved by the man who became a hero to Kathleen and the city of New York.
This is a survivor's story. It is the story of moving from being the unintended target of political terrorism to becoming the founder of Survivors of the Shield, a group that advocates for and provides support and assistance to the spouses and children of New York City police officers killed in the line of duty. It is the story of how she moved from poverty to the suburbs and refused to go back after Brian's death. It is a story of resilience in the face of senseless tragedy. And it is the story of evil villains and surprising superheroes.
    Critic Reviews:
"A raw, somber emotional journey that concludes with hope and a measure of forgiveness." (Kirkus)
    Members Reviews:
    Excellent Book
The book was so well written. The author told the story so vivid, I could imagine I was there. Which was at times difficult due to the tragic nature. I would just like to say, Kathleen Murray Moran, thank you for all you have done for individuals you have help through your work. You are an amazing person and your book was excellent.
    Wow! Powerful story!
Few people realize that there was a terrorist attack on Sept. 11th 1976. Kathleens husband Brian was a member of the NYPD bomb squad that fateful day, and as the terrorist hijacked a plane to Paris, the bomb theyd planted in a locker at Grand Central Station detonated killing Brian and injuring several members of his team.
This is a story of tragedy, redemption, inspiration, and forgiveness. Kathleen found answers to her questions in the most unlikely of all places...with one of the terrorist (Julie Busic) who she corresponded with for three years while she sat in prison for Brians murder.
Beautifully written and honestly told, this book is definitely worth listening to.
