A QUEST FOR ACCEPTANCE
MISGUIDED SENSITIVITY is an autobiographical account of a child of divorce that sociologists, psycho analysts, and teachers need to read. A very perceptive 8-year old boy, the eldest of three siblings, watched his parents divorced. He blamed himself. After much agony, observation and listening to the adults around him, he was determined to become a pleasing male to women, instead of an antagonising one. He learned, keenly, ardently, from every source possible, how to become one. From such a young age, and all through his high-school years, he had never stopped learning, one step each time. And he never failed to put his lessons into practice.
Phil's positive attitude could be attributed to the influence of his mother and grandmother. Phil met many girls in his roller-skating rink, in his after-school job, and later at school. He went out of his way to please them. While other kids walked through their days without care, Phil noted what people do and added every useful lesson to his how-to-be-good-to-females list. He was sensitive, intelligent, and caring. At times he was so ardent in trying to win others that he could not make decisions for himself. Many girls used him, taking advantages of his kindness, and Phil, who had a very strong need to be needed, accepted this treatment while making the most of what came his way. He trudged on. In the 70s where divorces were extremely rare, Phil struggled to survive in the best way he knew how.
Underlying all his actions was rejection. Deep down in his subconsciousness, for years and years he could not get over the fact that one of his parents did not want him. He might not have realised it, but readers can glean this sad, direct effect of the divorce to his young mind. Right or wrong, he did his very best to be accepted.
A case study of a child of divorce who grew up unguided by male role models, this book will help educators and counselors understand youths of similar background. It will be great too if young male readers can be enticed to learn about respecting women from Phil's notes.
What's after high school for Phil? Read LIFE IS A BALANCE, the continuation of his journey to self discovery.
