M.L. Elrick (@elrick), Marc Fellhauer (@MarcFell) and Shawn Windsor (@ShawnWindsor) convene in the Red Shovel Network fallout shelter to tick away the moments that make up a dull day, frittering and wasting the hour in an offhand way, kicking around on a piece of ground in Drew’s home town, waiting for someone or something to show them the way.
THE STRAIGHT DOPE: In a move sure to disappoint listeners ML, Marc and Shawn are counting on you to listen to the entire podcast. ML discloses right at the top that his old Detroit Free Press partner Jim Schaefer was GOING to be on this episode, but will be pushed back a week because ML got called in to work the night shift.
ML reveals the reason for his schedule change: An unprovoked dog attack on his colleague Jessica Dupnak. This terrible turn leads to a discussion of how reporters often encounter dangerous situations — sometimes putting their lives on the line — but sometimes find that “feel-good” stories can leave you not feeling so good. (Get well soon, J-Dup!)
Just in time for Christmas In July, ML reveals that signed copies of his book, “The Kwame Sutra: Musings on Lust, Life and Leadership from Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick” are now available at the Drew and Mike merchandise website. ML Soul of Detroit T-shirts are coming soon!
After a rare kind word for social media — specifically for reminding ML about his brushes with the various members of Pink Floyd — ML reminisces about the time his daughter missed out on a chance to perform with Roger Waters, got a second chance, took it, but still didn’t grasp HOW FREAKING COOL IT WAS THAT SHE GOT TO PEFORM WITH ROGER FRIGGING WATERS!!!
ML then discloses how his lack of technical prowess foiled his attempt to record the performance. In a second epic failure, on the ride home from Joe Louis Arena, he tried to explain “The Wall” to middle schoolers — providing yet another example of an old man wasting his precious breath on kids who would rather be on Instagram.
As ML launches into a story about the time he was backstage and photographed Pink Floyd during its show at the Palace of Auburn Hills for his college paper, Shawn — whose hometown practically invented dropping acid — unleashes a surprising hatred for The Floyd. (And takes a shot at innocent bystanders Rush in the process!)
Marc, in the midst of a discussion of ML’s incendiary college newspaper column about the Greek system, prompts ML to once again trot out his lame Dennis Miller impression.
On a roll, Shawn proceeds to violate ML’s safe zone — all over a misunderstanding about whether it was necessary to eat some dog treats on the air as part of a fictitious sponsor deal.
Facing tremendous headwinds blowing from South Detroit (aka Windsor, as in “Windsor, Shawn Windsor”), ML proceeds to read more of his column taking the piss out of fraternities.
ML reveals how his writings — including a column c...
