The clean energy transition seems unstoppable now, but back in 2011, Michael Liebreich, founder of Bloomberg New Energy Finance, exclaimed, "Yabasta," he was ready to say enough is enough with the UN COP process. "Yabasta is the rallying cry of the anti-globalists in the anti-capitalist, anti-globalists in Italy back then. And so I said, Yabasta, can we stop doing this? And the reason I said that was I was leading a team, a big team, hundreds of people, and we were tracking this incredible progress across clean technologies. Wind, solar, of course, also EVs, batteries, energy efficiency, the switch away from coal was pretty clear what was happening. And then there were these COPmeetings. Prime Minister Mark Carney came to office with pretty solid climate credentials. But it seems climate policies are dropping like flies since his election. It seems Carney's MOU with Alberta to build an oil pipeline while relaxing more environmental rules was the last straw for Steven Guilbeault, who resigned his cabinet post over the deal.To dive beneath the headlines, we talked to Max Fawcett, a climate columnist with the National Observer, to find out if Carney has sold out the environment or if he's a political chessmaster playing a long game.

The folks who say clean energy can never satisfy primary energy demand have it all wrong, says Michael Liebreich in his essay on The Pragmatic Climate Reset.

Due to the inefficiency of fossil fuels, only 68% of primary energy is provided by fossil fuels, he says.

"The 1.5 degree [energy] transition is dead," he says, but "Transition like a tortoise is absolutely not dead."

What does this all mean? Liebreich projects the growth of clean energy over time, and the results are surprising.

In Michael Liebreich's Pragmatic Climate Reset, he calls for an end to polarizing all-or-nothing climate action. He says we can get to 90% clean energy by dropping the absolute goals of getting to 100% renewable energy and banning fossil fuels.Getting to 90% can be done efficiently, cost-effectively by focusing on the cheapest energy solutions and using some natural gas.And besides, he says, by the time we get to 90% clean energy, we will know what to do about the last 10% that appears cost-prohibitive today.

We reached into our radio archives for this exclusive interview carried out on the banks of the Athabasca River in 2003 when Ken Dryden participated in the Boreal Rendezvous canoe expedition from Fort McKay to Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta. In this interview with David Dodge, a very relaxed Ken Dryden reveals another side of the hockey legend. He talks about the Boreal Forest, his time as president of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and some of his favourite experiences on his first-ever canoe expedition on a river.
