Green Gaslighting: Subscribing to Total Control (8/25/25)

Listen Later

Climate-cautious documentaries often appear appealing to viewers who want to ‘do the right thing’ by recycling, ending waste, standing up to big corporations for one reason or another, and fighting corruption. Nearly all of these films incorporate climate change propaganda into the narrative, often where it makes the least sense, and many use terms like ‘green washing’ to describe how corporations try to manipulate consumers with green packaging or wording. But most of these features are nothing more than themselves greenwashing, clever PR designed to control any potential opposition to rational public concerns. A recent documentary on Netflix called ‘Buy More’ points out how psychology is used to design websites in order to maximize consumption, how company’s engage in planned obsolescence, and how waste is encouraged for profit. But one of the featured voices is an ex-Unilever CEO, who notably is wearing the rainbow badge of King Charles, the WEF, and UN Sustainability Goals. The theme of consuming less was thus met with a corporate executive supporting the cause of ‘you will own nothing and be happy’ - it is the Communist policy of owning the means of production. The idea seems to be that due to the obvious waste of resources and trash accumulation perhaps we should not own anything, and instead just rent it from a big company. In fact, VW vehicles are now offering monthly subscriptions to unlock the full power of the vehicle. This is the next step in a long history of planned obsolescence, eliminating true user manuals, replacement parts, and repair shops, while making products that cannot be opened. So much of the ‘waste’ or ‘CO2’ arguments totally ignore the real pollution of synthetic chemicals and their dangers, just as focus on green initiatives mask the cultural issues of responsibility. There is not so much a trash issue as an issue of how we deal with the same; there is not a overpopulation issue, but an overcrowding issue; there is not a CO2 pollution issue but there is one of other pollutants that are invisible behind the piles of trash. So long as these things are hidden and out of mind the advocates for ‘change’ can act morally superior while they unknowing back the very industries they fight against. Big oil loves climate agreements, anti-oil groups work for oil companies, and most ‘green’ products are marketed as such for profit, not environmental reasons. Are the green warriors just stupid, naive, or willing participants in an elitist game of gas lighting and money? Now we are learning of the ultimate gas lighting: the US DOE has announced “carbon dioxide (CO2)-induced warming appears to be less damaging economically than commonly believed, and that aggressive mitigation strategies could be more harmful than beneficial.” The announcement was met with plans from major universities to fit commercial airlines with devices that allow them to spray materials to block the sun and cool the planet. With the announcement of the latter, and acknowledge of the former, it appears that the narrative is shifting so that people will be able to justify their cultish climate views while taking responsibility for stopping something that was nothing more than a computer model through a process of cooling which is nothing more than a natural cyclical process. And the game goes on.
