Green & Gritty episodes

  • Fast Fashion
This week we reflected on our relationships with the fast fashion industry, and the impact it has on the environment. In this episode we cover the birth of fast fashion, the waste that it creates, and the aspects of classism that it invokes. Fast fashion has had a hand in shaping societal beauty standards. What we wear as become integral to how we express ourselves. We ask ourselves, with all that we know about the environmental impacts of fast fashion, why do we still engage with it and why does it hold such strong societal indicators?

  • Government Inaction
This week is all about the ways in which our governments do not live up to their word. From promises of funding, to policy reform, to debt relief, government bodies around the world consistently fail to deliver on the promises they make to their people.
Our discussion in this episode revolves around how some governments lack the balls to take real action on environmental issues, and how more often than not, the outlined initiatives and goals set are merely performative deeds that aren't achieved.
We touch on everything from outdated international agreements, like the Montreal and Kyoto Protocols, to brand new frameworks and action plans, such as the UN 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and all the issues that seem to fall between the cracks with these policies.

  • Youth In Action
This week we get real about the consequences of growing up fighting the climate crisis, and things we wish we knew back when we were kids. We also discuss some of the brilliant and innovative youths working to combat climate change, and how to make sure these young but powerful voices are heard across the globe. The individuals we bring up in this episode (Autumn Peltier, Mari Copeny, Feliquan Charlamagne, Elsa Mengitsu, as well as the 15 Canadians that contributed to La Rose et. al. v Her Majesty the Queen) are achieving some Earth-shaking feats, but they are certainly not alone. The amount of passion and bravery bursting out of this younger generation is beyond admirable, and gives us so much hope for a more sustainable future.

  • Green Mis-Information
Are you ready for our first full episode?!
This week we tackle some pretty deep but super interesting topics... so grab your sustainably sourced notebook and pen and buckle up!
We start by discussing greenwashing, which includes how to spot it and how to stop it. Following, we have a segment on individuals vs climate change and where blame and solution expectations are placed. After a productive and reflective discussion on the gatekeeping of being green, we close out the episode with a breakdown of something we all know and (hopefully) love... recycling!
