I like to think of some people as VISIONARIES - like Marc-Andre Coulombe and his team at Viridis Terra and the TreesofLives Fund - believe that they can address each of these problems.

They have an answer for each stage and each part of the problem, and they are fighting to make a difference at each piece. Viridis Terra works to remediate land that has been degraded through mining and deforestation practices in North and South America.

They remediate the soil and work to bring the whole ecosystem back to life with their reforestation projects. This would be fantastic work, and many people would stop there. But for the team at Viridis Terra knew they would be fighting a losing battle if they did it the traditional way.

Because no matter how many hectares of land they remediated and planted new trees to grow, 1000s more hectares of trees would be chopped down at the same time.

So they took it further. They are also engaging in dialogue with the local communities living in degraded areas to discover new ways, enriched by both complementary experiences, to live harmoniously with the forest, no longer burning it down.

Because to solve the deforestation problem, we need to target the root of the problem. We need to transform the cost of restoration into an impact investment that generates returns both for the financial market that has the means to finance the restoration of millions of hectares and the vulnerable communities that are forced to survive through slash and burn practices while making sure the planet gets its fair share of biodiversity out of the restoration process.
