What does a conductor actually do… and how do they lead an entire orchestra without making a single sound?
In this episode of the Greenhouse Music Podcast, we begin our March mini-series, Brave Voices in Music, with the remarkable true story of Antonia Brico — one of the first women to conduct major orchestras in the early 1900s.
At a time when women were rarely invited to stand on the podium, Antonia studied, prepared, and listened her way into history. In 1930, she conducted the Berlin Philharmonic, and later founded the New York Women’s Symphony Orchestra. She believed orchestras should reflect real life, once saying:
“Men and women mix in life and they should mix in orchestras.”
In this episode, kids will:
🎵 Learn what a conductor actually does
🎵 Practice a real 4/4 conducting pattern
🎵 Develop listening skills through an interactive “Find the Problem” sound challenge
🎵 Discover how leadership in music begins with careful listening
Perfect for elementary-aged music makers (and the grown-ups listening alongside them), this episode blends music history, hands-on learning, and encouragement for brave leadership.
By the end, your child will not only understand how conducting works — they’ll feel empowered to lead with clarity and courage.
