What happens when we're so busy climbing that we stop seeing the mountain?
In the first episode of a new Greybeard Philosophy series, Dr. Brian Winsor returns from California's Sierra Nevada with a deeper question about the inner life:
What exactly is Base Camp?
The journey begins on the long ascent from North Lake toward Piute Pass. As elevation, fatigue, comparison, and endless granite steps narrow Brian's world to a simple cadence—right, left, one; right, left, two—he realizes that his strategy for successfully climbing the mountain has also madehim temporarily unaware of the mountain.
Through the Sanskrit idea of ullāsa, William Wordsworth's reflections on childhood and forgetting, and the Greybeardpractice of Stop, Calm, Rest, Heal, this episode considers howresponsibility, routine, and exhaustion can gradually diminish our capacity to notice the wonder that remains around us.
Perhaps Base Camp doesn't begin when the wilderness ends.
Perhaps it begins when we become awake enough to realizewe've been walking with our heads down.
This is Part 1 of Finding Base Camp, a new Greybeard Philosophy series exploring what it means to find, tend, andeventually live from the inner self.
