Most people who have driven California State Route 1 likely know it from the Big Sur region and probably have never come close to finishing the entire route. North of the San Francisco Bay area California State Route 1 functions as a coastal loop from US Route 101 via the 210 mile Shoreline Highway. California State Route 1 as originally conceived was far more ambitious and was originally planned end near Fortuna which would have required traversing the Lost Coast.
