gribbles - "Untitled Improv" - Hull EMOM Rehearsal

Listen Later

This is one of the last rehearsals I did in the afternoon of the 30th July 2025, before loading up the car to go over to The People's Republic in Hull to play it at my first EMOM. It's a kind of improvised piece - I know the shape of what I'm doing, but every time I play it, it moves around a little, or I add something. So there's still a couple of hesitant hiccups in here - but that's all part of its charm. That's what I'm claiming anyway!

The photos are from the gig itself - Thanks to Mike & Martine for taking them. And also for the good natter we had over the course of the night.

Extra thanks has to go to Mike for the gentle pressure that led me to say "Yes" to doing this. It was exactly the right thing to do, and I can;t wait to do more of thins sort of thing. Cheers, buddy.

[Edit]

A couple of folk have asked about what I'm using here. The main 'engine' is the Midicake Arp box. That's driving some synths that are hosted in Ableton. I also play a bit of live keyboard in places also though Ableton using a Novation Launchkey Mini. Al the samples are triggered from the Launchkey pads - again the samples are in a Drum Rack in Ableton.

So, the Arp is generally playing a single key/scale. You can hear the main patten running all the way though, with a little change up of the key/sale for the bridge parts. The drums and the incidental arms that come in around the old Lincolnshire samples are the Midicake Arp too. I just use one pattern.

There's some repeat/ratchetting set on one of the macro knobs which you can hear clearly at the start,

There;s a bit of reverb (using NI;s Raum in this case) in a few places, and the Ableton Beat Repeat set to randomly kick in on the Drum & Samples (which are grouped)

If there;'s some interest, I could do a bit of an explainer video showing what I do for this track. it's not that complex - but it is effective. Which is mainly down to the flexibility of the Arp.

I'm aiming to do this track at other EMOMs, and I'll definitely be digging more into the Midicak Arp...
