Grimes Family Values: A Walking Dead Podcast

Karen and Jamie recap and review the last two episodes of the fifth season of The Walking Dead. They share there likes and dislikes about the season as a whole and predictions they have for the forth coming sixth season.

Well week took last week off because Jamie was in need of a vacation, but we return this week to talk to you about Forget and Spend episodes 13 and 14 of The Walking Dead. Fortunately with the week off our podcast numbers will now be in line with the episode numbers for this season. So the let's start off with talking about Forget.

The Walking Dead has reached that point in the season when it has to start setting up the new story arc that will come to a close during the first half of the sixth season. In Remember Rick and the group have had their time to process the events of Terminus, the hospital, and being out on the road so now the plot can start to move on and story can be told.

The story for the last five episodes of season five looks like it will be the crew getting used to life in a new community that is safe. Unlike Woodberry and Terminus this new community is run by a woman, Deanna Monroe, an ex-Congresswoman. She welcomes the group by giving them two homes that they can stay in while exploring and figuring out where they fit, in this community. Deanna also interviews each member of the group, we see through a series of cut aways, in order to feel them out and determine what job she should assign everyone. During these interviews Deanna reveals this was a planned community that was built for rich people that was also intended to be self sustaining.

Deanna had hard time finding a job for Rick and Michonne but knew exactly what Noah ,Tera, and Glenn should do do. She assigned them to do supply runs with her son, Aiden, who runs the supply run crew. On their first supply run Aiden proved to be a bad leader as Tera was killed because Aiden would rather play with walkers than kill them. There is a fight back at the community between Glenn and Aiden because of this and the group's mistrust of their current situation is revealed.

This mistrust is reinforced by a discussion between Carol, Daryl, and Rick after Rick accepts the Constable job Deanna assigns him. They speak about how the people in there new home are weak and they fear they may become weak tas well. Rick then explains they won't becuase if the others are weak then his group will take over the community.

I'm not sure where the creators are going with Rick but it appears they are trying to turn him into a villain. I Hope this is isn't true because as the comic readers know the biggest villain is on his way. I only hope he rears his ugly head before the end of the season.

The Walking Dead - S5E11 - The Distance

Mary and Jamie both agreed that this episode was way better than the last two episodes. Jamie still has his misgivings about where the second half of season five is headed. They also have a debate about whether Rick is the true villian of the show, a position that Jamie is firmly against.

In episode eleven of The Walking Dead season five, The Distance, the group takes Aaron the stranger from the end of the last episode hostage. It's apparent that Rick has lost all faith in humanity and his level of trust for anyone outside of the group is pretty much non-existent.

Aaron introduces himself to the group and tries to convince them they should go with him to the community where he lives. Rick just can't trust Aaron especially because he kept saying that people are his community’s best resource, which seemed to bring up memories of Terminus for Rick. He has pictures and food as tokens of good faith and tools for convincing the group to believe him. Obviously this didn't work as he ends up tied up and interrogated.

The interrogation reveals that there are a couple of cars a few miles away which Rich doesn't believe but Michonne feels is worth checking out. Michonne, Abraham, Glenn, Rosita, and Maggie go to investigate the car claim. They find it to be true. They are still not sure if Aaron is telling the truth about only traveling with one other person so when the group decides to go to the community, Rick decides it will be at night.

That night they run into trouble along the way because they take a route that Aaron does not suggest and Glenn end up Driving through a hoard of walkers as if they were a swarm of mosquitoes. This separates them from the rest of the group that are riding in a RV. After a flare is shot into the air Rick, Michonne, Glenn, and Aaron have to fight their way to the rest of the group.

Once back together it is confirmed that Aaron was traveling with one other person his boyfriend, Eric, who now has a broken leg. It appears the rest of the group found him and saved his life. This is why Aaron reveals that the location of the new community is Alexandria, Virginia. They all make their way there the next morning and when they reach the gates they are welcomed by the sound of children playing. This is contrast to what Rick and Michonne talked about hearing outside Terminus and Woodberry, which was silence.

Next week we get to see if this community is a place they can actually settle down in or if it another trap set by yet another group of maniacs. Those of us who have read the comics already know the answer to that question.

Mary and Jamie didn't quite like this episode and didn't have much to say about it. We why below and then listen to the podcast.

This week Rick on The Walking Dead S5E10, Them, the gang were all together trying to make their way to Washington DC. They found themselves out of gas literally and figuratively. Struggling to get by without food or water proved a major challenge for Sasha, Daryl, and Maggie. All three of them having recently lost someone close to them they didn't find much worth living for anymore. The group was walking for day and days and as painful as it was for them it was just as painful for the audience because it was boring.

You know something is wrong when the most excitement you get is a thunderstorm passes through and the group is forced to find refuge in a barn that Daryl had found earlier. Interestingly enough the tree people who seemed the most lost were the first three to help as the group found themselves holding the doors of the barn closed as walkers were trying to make there way in from the storm. Yes, that's right Sasha, Daryl, and Maggie were the one that held the door closed until the rest of the group joined them. I guess this was a symbolic way of showing us that they had not completely given up yet.

I forgot to mention that Rick gave a speech this week that reminiscent of one from the comics in which he called the group the Walking Dead. Although in the comic Rick was alluding to their eventual fate, on the show Rick was explaining a way they all can cope and try to carry on even when things seem darkest.

Finally at the end Aaron shows up while Maggie and Sasha watch a sunrise once again letting us know they have found hope once again. Aaron knows who Rick is and wants to be taken to him. Was he the one that left the water in the road? Has Morgan met up with Aaron before the group and told Aaron all about them? I guess we have to wait until next week to find that out.

One more thing before I go and you listen to the podcast below, it seems that The Walking Dead has stumbled into a formula for the show. The group is out on their own and things get bad, someone dies and a few are hopeless, they meet a new group and a suspicious, and then they find a place to hold up and things are all right for awhile. Once this cycle is done wash rinse repeat. I hope the TV show does not get mired down in this formula because long drawn out interlude between exciting story arcs does not make great television. Stop giving us filler and move the story along.

In episode nine of season 5 we see Rick, Michonne, Noah, Tyreese, and Glenn make there way into the walled community that Noah grew up in before the change. Apparently the group has been on the road a while as they are now ouside of Richmond and no longer in Georgia(YAY!!)

The Walking Dead - Crossed

This week Jamie was joined by Heather to discuss The Walking Dead S5E7, Crossed.  Both agree there wasn't much to talk about as this was a set up episode for the mid-season finale so they had a little fun talking about who they would "ship" on the show.

The Walking Dead - Consumed

Mary and Jamie discuss the theme of this week's Walking Dead, which is rebirth by fire.  There were many instances of fire as Daryl and Carol head into Atlanta during their search for Beth.  This episode focused on where Carol and Daryl have come and where they are going both literally and figuratively.  Jamie and Mary both agree that even though Consumed was as uneventful as the last episode, Self-Help, it was one of the best of the season.  Mary expresses her wish for Carol and Daryl to hook up and Jamie emphatically disagrees.   Jamie thinks Beth and Daryl should hook up while Mary thinks it would be more age appropriate for Carl and Daryl to "knock boots."

Besides talking about this episode of The Walking Dead the live audience learned that Mary is a survivalist with weapons, ammo, and years worth of food.  Watch out blind a deaf children Mary is coming for you and everyone else Mary is going force you to procreate for food in the event of the zombie apocalypse.
