  • GCP254 - From Setback to Finish Line: Heather Carlson's IRONMAN Journey

Grow Clinton is proud to bring you episode 254 of the Grow Clinton Podcast, featuring Clinton's own Heather Carlson—wife, mom, professor, counselor, and IRONMAN athlete. Heather sits down with us to share the story behind her IRONMAN Jacksonville finish and the lessons that go far beyond the finish line.

Heather's path to IRONMAN wasn't straight. Recovering from surgery and injury forced her to slow down and rebuild, teaching her patience, resilience, and trust in the process long before race day ever arrived. That experience shaped not just how she trained, but how she approached every part of her life.

Training for life, not just for race day

One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation is Heather's perspective that endurance training isn't just about crossing a finish line. She shares how the discipline and mindset she's built through triathlon have made her a better parent, professor, and counselor—proof that the habits we build in one area of life ripple into everything else.

As a busy mom balancing a full-time career with serious training demands, Heather also gets real about the juggling act. She talks candidly about finding balance between family, work, and training, and what it actually takes to make room for a big goal without losing sight of the people who matter most.

    The mental game

IRONMAN is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Heather opens up about overcoming self-doubt, embracing discomfort, and building the kind of grit that carries you through mile 100 of the bike or mile 20 of the marathon. She reflects on race day execution and the lessons learned along the way—and why celebrating the finish matters more than chasing a perfect performance.

    Consistency over motivation

Perhaps the most practical piece of wisdom Heather shares: motivation fades, but consistency wins. She breaks down how small, daily habits compound into big achievements, and why showing up on ordinary days makes the extraordinary days possible.

    It takes a village

Heather quickly points out that an "individual" accomplishment like IRONMAN is never really achieved alone. She credits her coaches, family, and friends for helping her get to the starting line—and the finish line—reminding listeners that community and support are essential ingredients in any big goal.

    Her message to you

Whether you're considering an IRONMAN, a first 5K, or a completely different kind of personal challenge, Heather's advice is simple: you don't have to be extraordinary to start. You just have to keep showing up.

Grow Clinton thanks Heather for her positivity, strong work ethic, and her genuine willingness to help others reach—and exceed—their goals.

  • GCP253 - A Look Inside the Economic Development Process w/Andy Sokolovich & Matt Parbs

Economic development projects often generate questions long before a public announcement is possible.

    • How are projects identified?
    • Why are some details confidential?
    • When are local governments involved?
    • What does Grow Clinton do behind the scenes to help companies evaluate opportunities in the region?

In episode 253 of the Grow Clinton Podcast, President & CEO Andy Sokolovich and Vice President Matt Parbs offer an inside look at Grow Clinton’s economic development process, from the first project lead through development agreements, public announcements, and implementation.

The conversation provides helpful context for residents, businesses, elected officials, and community partners who want to understand better how economic development works in Clinton County and the surrounding region.

    From Leads to Local Opportunities

Andy and Matt discuss how economic development leads are generated and how Grow Clinton works with developers, companies, site selectors, and regional partners. Every project follows its own path, but the process often begins well before a prospective developer publicly identifies a community or site.

Grow Clinton helps prospective projects evaluate factors such as:

    • Available and developable land
    • Appropriate zoning and land-use compatibility
    • Utility capacity and infrastructure needs
    • Transportation access and site readiness
    • Local and industry-specific ordinances
    • Workforce, housing, quality-of-life, and community considerations
    • Potential public-private partnerships and development agreements
    • Complying with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements

    Why Confidentiality Matters

Many prospective developers and companies require non-disclosure agreements before sharing project details with a local economic development organization.

Confidentiality is not unusual; it is standard in professional economic development work. A company may need to protect competitive information, land-acquisition strategies, financing plans, customer relationships, operational details, or internal business decisions. Premature disclosure can jeopardize a project, affect property negotiations, create market speculation, or cause a developer to choose another location.

Andy and Matt explain how Grow Clinton balances the need for confidentiality with its responsibility to keep appropriate stakeholders informed. As projects advance, Grow Clinton works with the relevant local governments, utility partners, landowners, legal counsel, and other parties necessary to evaluate and complete the opportunity.

Working With Local and Regional Partners

Successful development is a team effort! Grow Clinton works closely with the City of Clinton, City of Camanche, City of Fulton, and Clinton County, along with utility providers and other local, regional, and state partners.

The episode explores when and how those partners become involved in a project. Depending on the opportunity, collaboration may include:

    • Reviewing potential sites and land availability
    • Confirming zoning, planning, and ordinance requirements
    • Evaluating water, sewer, electric, gas, broadband, and other infrastructure needs
    • Identifying development constraints and site-preparation needs
    • Coordinating discussions with property owners and developers
    • Considering incentives, public improvements, and financing tools
    • Drafting, reviewing, and executing development agreements

Development agreements are especially important because they establish clear expectations among the parties involved. They may address project commitments, timelines, infrastructure responsibilities, performance requirements, incentives, and other terms that help protect the public interest while supporting responsible investment.

    Addressing Misinformation with Facts

Economic development can be complicated, and limited public information during a confidential project can sometimes lead to assumptions or inaccurate information. Andy and Matt address common myths about Grow Clinton’s work and explain how the organization communicates accurate, timely information to key stakeholders and elected officials.

Grow Clinton’s role is to pursue opportunities professionally, protect confidential information when required, coordinate with public and private partners, and help communities make informed decisions when projects are ready for public consideration.

The organization is committed to sharing information at the appropriate time and through the appropriate channels, especially when projects require public action, formal agreements, hearings, approvals, or infrastructure investment.

  • GCP248 - Celebrating 250 Years! w/Clinton, Iowa 4th of July Festival (2026)

Grow Clinton Podcast Episode 248 highlights one of the community’s most anticipated summer traditions—the Clinton 4th of July Festival. In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Angela Gabel and Dave Helscher, two of the dedicated volunteers behind this growing celebration along Clinton’s riverfront.

This year’s festival is especially meaningful as it marks two major milestones: the 250th birthday of the United States and the 15th annual Clinton 4th of July Festival.

What started as a community-focused event has grown into one of Clinton’s favorite traditions, bringing families together for a full day of activities—all completely free to attend. That accessibility is intentional. The mission remains simple: create a space where families can celebrate Independence Day together without the barrier of admission costs.

The day kicks off with the Red, White & Run 4-Miler at 8:00 a.m., starting at LumberKings Stadium and following a scenic route along the Mississippi River and Discovery Trail. Whether you are running, walking, or bringing a stroller or dog along, it is a welcoming way to begin the holiday.

Morning activities continue with a grass volleyball tournament and wiffle ball at 9:00 a.m., followed by a bags tournament at 10:30 a.m. Then at 1:00 p.m., one of Clinton’s most anticipated traditions takes center stage—the parade. Featuring local businesses, organizations, classic cars, emergency vehicles, youth groups, and performers, the parade remains a highlight of the day and is still open for entries.

The festival officially opens at 2:00 p.m., transforming the riverfront into a hub of family-friendly activity. Attendees can enjoy bounce houses, carnival games, a petting zoo, barrel train rides, pedal tractors, food trucks, and live music. Pocket Constitutions will also be available while supplies last, adding a thoughtful patriotic touch to the celebration.

Entertainment continues throughout the afternoon, beginning with the National Anthem performed by Alice Lind, followed by live music from Danny’s Book Club from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Wrestling will take place from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., adding another layer of excitement to the lineup.

The celebration carries into the evening with a LumberKings baseball game, offering another opportunity for the community to gather before the day concludes with fireworks along the Mississippi River. Widely regarded as one of the best fireworks displays in eastern Iowa, it provides a memorable ending to a full day of celebration.

What makes this event truly special is the people behind it. The Clinton 4th of July Festival is organized entirely by volunteers who are committed to building a stronger, more connected community. Their work ensures that this tradition continues to grow while remaining accessible to everyone.

  • GCP247 - Save Money on Electric! w/yellowblue LED feat. John Hutchcroft & Mark Dann

Episode 247 of the Grow Clinton Podcast spotlights how yellowblue LED helps businesses cut energy costs and modernize facilities with turnkey LED lighting, solar, and EV charging solutions.

    Episode Overview

In this episode, John Hutchcroft and Mark Dann of yellowblue LED walk through how they partner with businesses to slash utility bills while improving lighting quality, safety, and overall facility performance. They share real-world examples from Midwest companies that have transitioned away from outdated lighting and begun layering in solar and EV infrastructure to future‑proof their operations.

For more information, please visit https://www.yellowblueled.com.

    What John & Mark Do

John and Mark represent yellowblue LED in the Midwest, helping owners and facility managers navigate the full journey from “we know we’re wasting energy” to “we have a high‑efficiency solution in place.” Their work centers on three core services:

Consultation: On‑site facility assessments to understand current energy usage, identify where lighting and power systems are under‑performing, and outline targeted LED, solar, and EV options.

Design: Using advanced photometric modeling and system planning to create layouts that meet or exceed existing light levels while reducing energy draw and enhancing safety and productivity.

Execution: Coordinating licensed installation crews, scheduling work around business operations, and managing rebates and grants so projects are completed with minimal disruption and maximum financial benefit.

Across warehouses, plants, offices, retail, hospitality, and municipal facilities, John and Mark deliver purpose‑built systems backed by an industry‑leading 10‑year parts-and-labor warranty covering fixtures, components, and installation.

    Services Highlighted in the Episode

During the conversation, you’ll hear how yellowblue LED packages several high‑impact solutions into one cohesive strategy for energy savings and modernization.

    Commercial LED Lighting

John and Mark help convert outdated incandescent, fluorescent, and HID fixtures to high‑efficiency LED, often cutting lighting energy use by 60–80% while improving light quality and reducing maintenance. Their team designs interior and exterior lighting for production areas, parking lots, offices, and customer‑facing spaces, tailoring each project to the facility’s needs.

    Solar Power Integration

For businesses ready to take the next step, yellowblue LED collaborates with solar partners to add rooftop or ground‑mounted systems that offset grid usage and stabilize long‑term operating costs. These commercial solar solutions are engineered to complement LED upgrades, further reducing electricity costs and enhancing sustainability metrics.

    EV Charging Infrastructure

As fleets and employees adopt electric vehicles, John and Mark help organizations plan and install commercial EV charging stations that add value to the property and support emerging transportation needs. This includes identifying the right mix of chargers, siting them for convenience and safety, and integrating them into broader energy‑management strategies.

    Cost Savings & Incentives

One of the most compelling parts of episode 247 is the financial story behind these projects.

Switching to LED lighting alone can reduce lighting energy consumption by at least 60%, with many clients seeing savings of up to 80% on that portion of their bill, depending on hours of operation and existing equipment. When paired with solar and smarter EV infrastructure, those savings compound over time, lowering overall operating costs and freeing up capital for growth.

Yellowblue LED is a trusted trade ally with utilities across the country and regularly secures incentives and grants that can cover up to 70% of total LED project costs, dramatically reducing out‑of‑pocket investment. In the episode, John and Mark explain how their team handles the rebate process—from paperwork to verification—so businesses can focus on running their operations while still capturing every available dollar.

Add in the 10‑year parts and labor warranty on lighting systems, and many projects become cash‑flow positive quickly, as energy and maintenance savings outpace the net project cost over the life of the system. For companies in the Midwest and beyond, it’s a practical pathway to lower expenses, better lighting, and a more sustainable footprint.
