Leaving it doesn't work. Do this instead.

Let me start with this optimistic question: what does easy gardening look like?

Well, if we are being honest with ourselves, it isn't how you are currently doing it? You are working hard enough. But the results aren't there. So you get back on your hands and knees, and try even harder. And so it goes on. And on.

It's not a good loop.
I know. I have done it too.

Then, out of pure frustration, I started this idea, the 100 day experiment. I didn't think it would work. I started doing little garden related tasks every day.

I used a simple framework.

Work on the garden plan, the lawn plan, the trees plan, and repeat. 

For just 10 mins a day.

Something special started.

I became excited at each and everyday.

It's 21st March 2023, the lawn is starting to grow, just.

We can now see the damage from our dog, Oban.

The best way we have found to fix the damaged areas is to make sure the lawn is well fed, and we over seed the lawn each year with some new fescues grasses.

We've learnt that the rye grasses are tough and good for hard wearing, but the fescues recover better from dog wee damage.

What can I say on a day like today.

Dad passed away yesterday.

He did good.

He'd read everything I wrote, and listened to every podcast I spoke.

He'd check in from time to time.

And he'd always sign off in the same way - "Love dad. Love Grandad"

Seemed too simple when he was here, but now he's gone that simple seems so powerful.

"Constant gentle digging"

I thought about digging briefly yesterday.

It can sometimes be hard to start.

But there is reward in starting.

Digging the soil, turning over the beds, making small progress is all thats needed.

I like to think that the digging only needs doing once a season, after that it's small efforts.

Which got me thinking, perhaps just make small gentle efforts.

Rather than making a great deal about it, just do a little bit.

Then go back and do a bit more, repeat.

Why make it hard when constant gentle progress is all thats needed.

Yesterday I posted a short note to the All Gardening Cafe on Facebook.

It's a group that was set up a few years back.

You see the garden is there for you, it will wait for you, it will connect with you.

Energy comes.

There is a power in people that is bigger than being just one.

He's building a snow man with Oban our dog.

he's making pancakes, Angus love to cook.

"dad, can we go sledging".

"sure" I answer.

Days like today don't happen very often, so make the most of them.

If you had the chance to start with a blank garden canvas.

What would you do first.

Would you plant a tree?

Would you put in a patio?

Would you carve out an area for flowers?

Would you grow a fine lawn?

Or

Put in a shed.

Put in potatoes.

Grow tomatoes.

Or would you just grab a chair and sit in your garden.

Grab a brew, a glass of wine, a beer, and ponder.

Find your favourite spot perhaps.

You know that sunny warm spot.

You see to really know how to grow a garden, you must know what you want it to be.

To know what you want it to be, you must take time to understand what it is.

Or what it could be.

Or what it could give you.

Think slow, take the time, discover what it is to you.
