In a decades-old case, the family of anti-apartheid activist Caiphus Nyoka, alongside the Foundation for Human Rights and the law firm Webber Wentzel, have hailed recent progress as a long-overdue move toward justice for Nyoka's brutal murder. This comes after Johan Marais, a former police officer, admitted to the 1987 killing of Nyoka, pleading guilty in the Pretoria High Court. Marais' conviction has now been secured, with his sentencing scheduled for January 27, 2025. Meanwhile, his three co-accused are set to face trial starting November 18, 2024, in the Gauteng High Court in Benoni, with the proceedings expected to wrap up by early December.
