The collards plant growing on its own is suffering. Transitioning from lawn to veggi beds might not be a quick transition.

It is the same effort to harvest and clean a small leaf as a big leaf so my advice: maximize leaf size.

Sunny and well drained. Those are the basic requirements for a spot that will make plants happy.

It matters when you plant plants. Observe and learn to have success.

Start plants from seeds. It is the most economical.

Your soil will degrade and need to be amended. Material must always be added. Compost is the best way to get this material.

There is no such think as yard waste. Start a compost pile today!

A description of my composting set-up

Soil is one of the four ‘S’s’ of Success gardening. Either you are lucky and there is good soil where you live. Or you need to buy or build soil. Building soil is easy, it is called compost and I will talk more about it tomorrow.
