The Centers for the Arts in Bonita Springs has a brand new exhibition opening Sept. 3 called “Small Wonders: Insects in Focus” that puts some of the Earth’s tiniest creatures on display.

When you think of an “endangered species” chances are you probably think of mammals, birds or marine life. But, nearly 20% of the world’s plant species are currently in danger of extinction.

The Galapagos Islands represent one of the world’s pinnacles of natural diversity as well as scientific discovery. It is the place that inspired Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection , and has since become one of the last unspoiled ecosystems on earth. We're listening back to a conversation with the author of a book traces the the journey of a team of scientists who spent a year in the Galapagos collecting specimens that bolstered Darwin's ideas.

The State of Florida’s Blue Green Algae Task Force will meet for the fourth time this Friday, August 30 in Gainesville . The meeting is open to the public and will be streamed on The Florida Channel . The task force’s five members are charged with finding ways to reduce the nutrient pollution that fuels toxic cyanobacteria blooms, and determine how resources might best be allocated to expedite nutrient reductions in Lake Okeechobee and the downstream estuaries.

Back in 2017, the Florida Aquarium teamed up with the Horniman Museum and Gardens in London to embark on a project to save coral reefs by predictably inducing corals to spawn in the laboratory. This technique had been accomplished by Horniman with Pacific coral species, but Atlantic corals, like the ones populating the Florida Reef Tract , had never spawned anywhere but in the wild.

Back in 2014, 12 coral species received protection under the Endangered Species Act , but they still have not received the critical habitat protection the law requires to be designated within one year. Now, the Center for Biological Diversity has filed a lawsuit against the National Marine Fisheries Service , seeking to force it to establish such critical habitat for these coral species. We're joined by Emily Jeffers, she is a staff attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity.

The Everglades Agricultural Area – or EAA – Reservoir was initially proposed as a component of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan , or CERP, which was authorized by Congress in 2000. The reservoir, south of Lake Okeechobee, was planned to hold at least 240-thousand acre-feet of water, and include water quality features necessary to meet state and federal water quality standards.

The Southwest Florida based arts non-profit Love Your Rebellion will hold its first annual Zinefest Oct. 19 to celebrate the grand opening of LYR’s Zine Library at Neenie’s House in Fort Myers. The library will serve as a space to house a permanent collection of small-circulation self-published writing and art books, including editions of Love Your Rebellion’s own zine.

Passed by Congress in June of 1919, then ratified on August 18th of 1920, and officially adopted eight days later on August 26th, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted women the right to vote. But, the movement began long before 1920. Beginning in the mid-19th century, woman – and some men – wrote, lectured, marched and lobbied to achieve what many Americans of the time considered to be radical change. Very few of the movement’s early supporters actually lived to see it succeed.
