Philip Lock from Philadelphia arrived in Dodge City from Philadelphia looking for a girl. This girl had apparently written to her mother telling her that she was working at a school in Dodge but the school had never heard of her and Lock was worried that something had happened to her. When Marshall Matt Dillon asked her name and description he was told Laura Simmons whom he knew well but he did not let on to Lock instead he went to see Laura. He wanted to know why Philip Lock was looking for her.
