Gunsmoke #460, "Harriet," a young woman named Harriet Horn stumbles into Dodge City after walking forty miles across the prairie, claiming her wagon horses ran off during the night. Marshal Matt Dillon immediately suspects she's hiding something, and his instincts prove correct when the truth emerges: Harriet witnessed two drifters, Dan Scorp and Webb Hoogler, murder her father during a robbery attempt. Now she's in Dodge with a deadly purpose of her own.
Refusing to cooperate with Matt's offer of justice through a trial, Harriet takes a job at the Long Branch Saloon and begins manipulating her father's killers, playing one against the other in a dangerous game designed to provoke them into a fatal confrontation. Chester is bewildered watching the seemingly refined young woman cozy up to these brutal men, while Matt confronts Harriet about her vengeful scheme. She remains defiant, insisting these men belong to her, not the law, and that she'll be their executioner regardless of what the Marshal does.

Gunsmoke #459, "Hard Virtue," opens with Andy and Millie Cole arriving in Dodge City, hoping to sell their wagon and make a fresh start. When freight line owner Ed Fellon's runaway team nearly kills Millie, the hot-tempered Andy nearly comes to blows with him. To make amends, Fellon offers Andy a job and pays for the damaged wagon, but Andy's suspicions are immediately aroused. His distrust deepens when he discovers boot prints with Spanish heels outside their shack and realizes someone has been visiting Millie while he's at work. Despite Millie's denials, Andy straps on a gun for the first time since arriving in Dodge.
Marshal Matt Dillon learns that Doc Adams delivered a note from Millie to Ed Fellon, marked as business but suspicious given the circumstances. When Matt confronts Fellon and warns him to stay away from Millie Cole, the freight line owner insists the note was purely business related. With Andy wearing a gun and growing more volatile by the hour, Matt finds himself trying to prevent a killing, caught between a jealous husband, a mysterious wife, and a man who may or may not be innocent.

Gunsmoke #458, "The Wake," a stranger named Gus Mather arrives in Dodge City with a coffin in his wagon, claiming it contains his best friend Orson Boggs, who died of a fever. Mather buries Boggs on Boot Hill without a preacher or ceremony, then throws an elaborate wake with free food and liquor for anyone who'll attend. Chester and Doc Adams are invited and find the whole affair suspicious, especially when Mather keeps the drinks flowing night after night, spending money far too freely for a drifter.
Marshal Matt Dillon shares Chester's suspicions when he learns about Mather's extravagant spending and evasive answers. When questioned about Boggs, Mather nervously lets slip that his dead friend came from the Red Bank country near the Pawnee Reservation, then quickly tries to cover his mistake. Dillon suspects the elaborate wake might be a scheme to convince everyone that Orson Boggs is dead when he isn't, possibly to help someone escape the law. With only this slim lead to follow, Matt and Chester prepare to ride for Red Bank country to uncover the truth behind the mysterious burial.

Gunsmoke #457, "Old Faces," Tom and Tilda Cook are newly arrived in Dodge City, full of plans for their future together. Their optimism quickly sours when a drunk man accosts Tilda at the stage depot, and Tom angrily defends her. The situation escalates dramatically when the man's partner, Ed Ivers, a notorious ex-gunman from Texas, encounters Tilda at the general store where she's just started working. Ivers claims to recognize her from two years earlier on a Mississippi riverboat called the Memphis Queen, implying she worked there in a disreputable capacity. When Tom confronts Ivers at the saloon, the gunman makes insulting remarks about Tilda's past, and the hot-tempered young husband challenges him to a gunfight.
Matt Dillon tries to intervene, visiting the Cooks' room to talk Tom out of facing the dangerous gunman. Tilda admits the truth—she did work on the Memphis Queen for a year, though she doesn't remember Ivers. Now Tom must decide whether to go through with a fight he'll likely lose, or find another way to defend his wife's honor and their new life together in Dodge.

Gunsmoke #456, "Spring Term," Marshal Matt Dillon becomes the target of a vengeful killer from his past. When a peaceful townsman named Dane Shaw is shot in the back on a quiet Dodge City street, the dying man mutters one word: "Stone." Matt recognizes the name from years earlier in Matagorda County, where a cow thief named Stone was hanged by cattlemen. Stone's partner, a man named Danch missing one ear, had sworn to kill Matt in revenge, though Matt had nothing to do with the hanging. With Dane Shaw wearing a hat similar to Matt's and built much the same, it becomes clear that the marshal was the intended victim.
As Matt and Chester search for the one-eared assassin, Matt catches a man named Bill Lee following him down an alley with a gun. Despite days of interrogation, Lee refuses to admit any connection to Danch or the shooting. Frustrated by the stalemate and tired of being hunted through Dodge City's streets, Matt must find a way to draw the real killer out of hiding before another innocent person dies in his place.

Gunsmoke #455, "Minnie," a rough-edged woman named Minnie Higgins arrives in Dodge City with a bullet wound through her arm. When Doc Adams treats her injury, she claims it's from falling off a horse, but Matt Dillon immediately suspects a gunshot. Despite Minnie's insistence she'll leave town at dawn, she quickly changes her plans and sets her sights on Doc Adams with single-minded determination.
What follows is a relentless pursuit as Minnie latches onto the increasingly frantic physician, buying him drinks, waiting for him outside restaurants, and refusing to take no for an answer. She even barges into the Long Branch Saloon, threatening to cause a scene if Doc won't sit with her. As Minnie orders enormous meals and dogs Doc's every step around town, the normally unflappable doctor finds himself cornered by this determined woman who simply won't be shaken off. Matt and Chester watch with amusement as their friend grows more desperate to escape Minnie's iron-willed affections.

Gunsmoke #454, "Heros Departure," begins with Chester excitedly telling Marshal Dillon about meeting Jonathan Wood, a war hero who's become the toast of Dodge City. Wood claims he single-handedly saved his company during the Battle of the Hogback by manning a Gatling gun while his comrades retreated. Everyone in town, from Moss at the livery to Doc Adams, is eager to shake the brave soldier's hand, and Wood is considering settling near Dodge. Even Kitty is charmed by the modest hero, though Matt remains somewhat reserved about the adulation.
The situation takes a dark turn when a young man named Jake Rowe arrives in town with a very different version of events. Rowe confronts Marshal Dillon, claiming that Wood is actually a coward and a liar whose actions led directly to the death of Rowe's father, Jed. According to Jake, Wood panicked and ran during the battle, and it was Jed Rowe who truly held the line while covering the retreat. When Dillon explains he can't legally run Wood out of town for telling stories, Jake makes it clear he intends to handle the matter himself, setting up a dangerous confrontation between the celebrated hero and the vengeful son.

Gunsmoke #453, "The Cook," Sandy King has found an unusual way to pay off his week-long tab at Hank Green's Del Monico restaurant in Dodge City. After Hank complains about feeding him on credit, Sandy offers to replace the establishment's drunken cook, and his culinary skills quickly transform the struggling eatery into the most popular spot in town. Matt Dillon, Doc, Chester, and Kitty all marvel at the sudden improvement in the food, and word of Sandy's cooking spreads as far as Texas among the trail herds heading to Dodge. However, the good times come to a violent end when a belligerent, half-drunk customer complains about his eggs and things escalate into a deadly confrontation.
Marshal Dillon and Chester pursue Sandy across the prairie, but their chase is complicated when they encounter a large cattle herd that obliterates the fugitive's trail. The trail boss, Purdy, mentions that his men were looking forward to eating at Del Monico's after hearing about the excellent new cook. Meanwhile, Sandy's flight leads him to an isolated ranch where he encounters young Effie Jayhorn, and his reasons for stopping there may involve more than just needing rest and water.

Gunsmoke #452, "Kitty's Good Neighboring," finds Kitty Russell stepping in to nurse an ailing neighbor, Nettie Morbin, who lives alone on an isolated prairie homestead while her husband Luke is away. Doc Adams asks for Kitty's help when he can't move Nettie to town, and Kitty willingly rides out to care for her friend. After several days of nursing, Luke unexpectedly returns home and curtly dismisses Kitty, insisting his wife no longer needs help. Though puzzled by his hostile manner, Kitty respects Nettie's wishes and leaves.
When Doc asks Kitty to check on Nettie one more time before he leaves for an urgent operation in Hay City, she reluctantly makes the trip back to the Morbin place. This time, Kitty walks into a dangerous situation she doesn't fully understand. Luke's behavior grows increasingly menacing, and a stranger named Joe appears, making it clear that Kitty has stumbled onto something far more threatening than a simple sick call. Trapped at the remote homestead, Kitty finds herself a prisoner, with Nettie helpless to intervene and tensions escalating.

Gunsmoke #451, "Dirt," finds Marshal Matt Dillon caught between family pride and deadly threats as rancher Nate Sybertz prepares to marry Polly Troyman. When Polly's hot-headed brother Henry confronts Sybertz in the Long Branch Saloon, Matt intervenes just before gunplay erupts. The proud but impoverished Troyman family, still clinging to their former Virginia gentility, desperately needs this marriage to succeed, though Henry makes clear he'll shoot Sybertz if the rancher jilts his sister again after postponing the wedding once before.
The situation grows more dangerous when Chester discovers an anonymous note threatening a killing if the wedding proceeds. With enemies on both sides—Henry warning Sybertz not to run, and an unknown party vowing violence if he marries—the groom announces he'll wear his gun to the ceremony. As Matt investigates the Troyman family and the reluctant bride herself, he promises to maintain peace at tomorrow's wedding, but tensions run high and motivations remain murky in this volatile mix of Southern honor, wounded pride, and frontier justice.
