Guru is a word reserved for a spiritutal teacher, one who can take us from the darkness of Ignorance into the light of Knowledge. All other teachers may fall under categories like, Acharya, Upadhyaya or Pundit. Only a Self-realised soul who can guide others towards the same path may be referred to as a Guru- for the blind cannot lead the blind towards light !
The Supreme Brahman, or the One true Reality, is also called a Guru. There is no possibility of Self-realisation without the grace of the Supreme One, thus He/ It too is called the Guru.
