Gwen's Artist Statement:
I’ve been recording noise since my tiny hand could grip a microphone. Many of my recordings have been lost to time, but I still have a cassette tape from middle school, a glimpse of my humor in the year 2000: Short stories with Bob.
Take a 10 minute journey through my vibrational history. Designed to sound like tuning a radio, you will experience clips of my oldest surviving recordings. I like to capture the present’s vibrations, which become tomorrow's history. I consider this Sound Collage a self portrait. A record of my journey as an audio witch.
As a transgender individual, it’s hard to look at old photos of myself, because I don’t like the face that’s staring back at me. That aspect of my past causes me pain, but I do love listening to my old music. A lot of it is cringy, but that’s because I was learning.
These clips showcase some moments of past happiness, and I do this for lost music friends John Doer and Matt Bennet, and all the alternate versions of me that lost the battle with depression.
I do this because they can’t any more.
