Let's face it, we are not really taught personal finance topics in school and that is just a shame. We learn about history, science, language and math. Our schools even teach us how to cook, but they don't teach us how to spend responsibily? That's just not responsible. As I have grown over the years I've realized that there are some financial lessons every high school and person should be taught. 

These are lessons that I wish I learned. So, as I go over these 9 easy financially responsible choices you can make today you probably will want to get your pen and paper ready to take notes.

You're never too young to start planning for college, especially nowadays when college can be quite expensive if you're not careful. Every day that you or your child has to prepare and plan is an opportunity that must not be wasted. My college experience was decent to say the least. Nothing spectacular. It could have been better. My grades could have been better. I could have taken fewer student loans with proper planning. I just didn't know a lot and graduated in 5 years with over $40,000 in student loans. I learned quite a bit from my college experience and want to share some tips for when planning for college in that final year of high school.

However, today I want to briefly touch on a topic that I believe can sometimes be just as important as your education and that is networking. Don’t get me wrong…in any field you desire to work, education is the foundation that you build your career on. But networking is the wall that helps your career grow and flourish. So I get it, you want to take that really nice trip to Hawaii and you see an ad for a credit card that will help you do just that. The only problem is that you have now introduced the world of debt into your life with what some people call the cigarette of the financial world, a credit card. I know there are people out there who are going to disagree with this post and understandably so. I used to be one of those people who was obsessed with using my credit card to get the points and cash back rewards, you know the “perks” of having a credit card.

That is until I learned that virtually no one gets wealthy from using credit cards. According to a survey conducted on the Forbes 400 (richest 400 people in America as rated by Forbes magazine), 75% said becoming and staying debt free was the best way to build wealth. Hmmm, so using a credit card as a tool to build your credit so you can have a high credit score doesn’t really contribute to your wealth?

So what’s the point of a credit card then? Well, let’s see if we can go over the main “reasons” people get credit cards and maybe you’ll come to realize the way I did that credit cards are not my friends and not worth the trouble of having around.

Where do you see yourself 30 to 40 years from now? Hopefully, you are living your retirement dream. Me personally, I plan to be retired, traveling the world and serving the community even more than before retirement while living in a paid off house without any debt. As we all dream, we need to understand one simple truth. That is, our dreams will only become a reality if we act today and work hard right now. The Employee Benefit Research Institute recently reported that approximately 1 in 4 workers say they have less than $1,000 saved for retirement. That is unacceptable.
