“Life The Battlefield”

Hacking As A New Popular Sport

Listen Later

"We live in a new world. From now on we will be exposed to constant cyber attacks," said Minister Clare O'Neil.
How much do we know about this?
How safe do we feel?
How much do we actually consider online security?
Have the Optus and Medibank “incidents” taught us anything?
As far as we are aware, a sophisticated hack gave access to up to 9.8 million Optus users, giving them access to information such as phone numbers, dates of birth, email addresses, passport and driver's license numbers, among other things.
What concerns me is that Optus did not send out messages or emails to its clients informing them of this situation.
Instead, under the guise of being "the fastest and most effective means to inform as many current and previous users so they can be on the watch," it instead released a press release.
Come on, Who among us still reads press releases, you could ask?
Is there a method to get beyond guilt and accountability in this?
Because no one read the press statement, especially around the holidays, only a few people undoubtedly discovered they had been hacked and kept using the Optus service, at which point the business absolved itself of responsibility and formally "notified customers" about the event.
From now, Brands will need to adopt an integrated strategy for marketing communications in the future. This implies that they communicate with their audience using a variety of media platforms, including social media, television, radio, and any other channels to which the business has access.
More consumers will hear you if you use more channels.
The business need not employ all of the aforementioned channels in order for the message to reach the user, but only the most efficient ones.
In this situation, Optus as a mobile operator could have easily notified all of its customers through automated messages, but the business chose not to do so.
Why?
The weakest link in any chain is always a human, is one of the precious things I've learned.
As a leaders, and business owners we always must:
Inform our clients of important updates before anybody else, on an individual, one-to-one basis.
