Hair loss is a common complication after weight loss surgery. It tends to peak at three to six months post-op. Often induced by the actual stress of the surgery coupled with inadequate protein intake and vitamin intake. 


In this episode, I go through why hair loss occurs, how to manage it nutritionally and ways to encourage the hair to grow back. 


I’ve put together a handy protein counter to help you reach the recommended minimum 80g protein for females and 100g protein for males. Click here to access it


A summary of nutrient recommendations were: 

  • Protein Intake 80g of protein for women and 100g for men (including sufficient amounts of high biological value proteins like meat, seafood, tofu, dairy). 
  • Omega - 3’s: 2-3 servings of oily fish or 15 mL of flaxseed oil
  • Up to 2.5g of biotin (from food and supplements - check with your dietitian for specific recommendations) 
  • One or two multivitamin capsules (such as BN Healthy - Discount Code: 20SN for 20% off. 
  • Vitamin B12: 350 to 500ug/day (or dosed based on blood tests) 
  • Iron: Iron based on blood tests. 
  • Additional zinc is not recommended as it is already present in sufficient doses in multivitamins that contain minerals.
