In this episode, we look at an early local chain of drive-in restaurants that was once located in Los Angeles -- called Carpenter’s Sandwiches. This chain was a fixture in Los Angeles, having several locations throughout town offering a large menu of hot food and an array of beverages including cold draft beer all served car-side by carhops for in-car dining.

The Emergence of drive-in restaurants in Southern California started with the first drive-in A&W®. For over a hundred years this chain has kept southern California’s thirst quenched with their delicious root beer and tasty food. From the beginning the restaurant adopted the emerging widespread ownership of the automobile in its infancy and adapted their concept to accommodate the drive-in culture that they helped create.
