Honestly, I had NO idea that Quirky was going to be exhibiting at CES this year. So, it was quite a treat finding them in isle 10,400,185. They say the Beamer is about 3 weeks away from shipping. Hooray!

3D Televisions? Pffft. Tablet Computers? Whatever. eReaders? So 2009.

This year, the hottest item on the show floor was a toy. A kick ass, iPhone controlled, flying quadrocopter! This is the Parrot AR Drone, and it is awesome. But what does it offer the HHH filmmaker? How about two on-board cameras for starters. They haven’t released any availability or pricing info yet.

Now here’s a handy-dandy little contraption. The iRecord Pro let’s you take any incoming video signal, and record it straight to your iPhone and iPod touch. That means you don’t have to waste time encoding, copying and syncing through iTunes. Just hit record and go. Pretty neat!

If you plan on making extensive use of your iPhone during your workflow, you’ll need a backup battery.

Amidst the bazillions of iPhone and iPod batteries peppering the CES floor, I stumbled across the HyperMac Nano. Its small and sexy design seemed like a natural companion for an iPhone.

Many people (including myself) use iPhone cases with built-in external batteries… but sometimes, those cases cause as many problems as they solve. So, it may be worth having something like the HyperMac Nano on hand.

Yup. The brand new OWLE Bubo might be the coolest camera grip ever… but not for the reasons you would think. A couple weeks ago, we received one of the first units off the production line. Since then, we’ve been putting it through its paces… and we’ve got the video to prove it.

Ever shot video with an iPhone 3GS? Ever tried panning, or shooting a fast moving subject? If so, then you are no doubt aware of ‘rolling shutter.’ It’s that weird looking warble that makes everything look like it’s made of Jello… hence the commonly used term, Jellocam. It’s not just the iPhone that suffers from this debilitating condition. It effects many low cost digital cameras.

But fear not, that wiggly, warbly, wangly (sorry, just needed a third w) footage may soon be jello-free! The Foundry, a visual effects software company out of the U.K., has released the appropriately named Rolling Shutter. It’s a plug-in for Adobe After Effects, and the Foundry’s Nuke, designed to aid the visual effects process. However, with a few adjustments, Rolling Shutter may be able to reduce or remove your iPhone video’s wiggles.

A few weeks back we posted a story featuring apps that can turn your iPhone into a handy-dandy teleprompter. Our favorite application was (and still is) Bodelin’s ProPrompter ($9.99). It’s flexible, loaded with features, and scrolls text smoothly. Despite the convenience of a teleprompter in your pocket, one problem remained. How do you keep your iPhone close to your camera lens while shooting? Bodelin is looking to solve the problem with a low-cost camera mount called the ProPrompter Wing. They sent us one of these aluminum bad-boys last week. After running a few tests, we’re ready to share what we’ve learned. We’ll even explain a couple tricks for achieving the best results.

It’s no secret to Hand Held Hollywood readers that I’m a huge fan of a storyboarding app named Hitchcock. And now that Apple has made it one of their ‘featured’ apps in the iTunes store, it’s attracting many more fans every day.

While roaming the halls of the DV Expo, I was able to catch up with Hitchcock’s creator, Jonathan Houser. I asked him a few questions, and even got him to fess-up about some cool new features that are coming to future versions of Hitchcock.

I admit it. I’ve been using Final Cut Pro for years, and I still only know about 20 keyboard shortcuts. Maybe 25 if I’ve had a Redbull. The worst part forgetting the those commands is having to look through the manual (or PDF). It’s never as quick and easy as it should be. There’s usually a lot of page flipping and time wasting involved.

Enter iKeysToGo: Final Cut Pro 7. It’s a searchable, well organized list of keyboard shortcuts. That might sound unimpressive for $2.99, but you’d be amazed how handy this app really is. There’s a lot of time to be saved with this puppy. I’ll let Diana Weynand tell you more about it.

And I’m sure this isn’t what the developer wants to hear, but iKeyToGo also makes for excellent bathroom reading. You’re welcome.

While traversing the expo isles, I came across a new handheld teleprompter from Autocue Qtv. It looks pretty solid, plays nice with your iPhone, and I’m sure it would give your on-camera talent a boost. That’s the good news. The bad news is the high price ($899).
