Oscar describes in detail how to make frijoles (pinto beans) and refritos (refried pintos). He also described how to make his tasty green salsa, and we wrap up the half hour with how Oscar makes Horchata.

Oscar and Franki talk about the nothing burger that happened at the end of Title 42 which was DeSantis' reason for signing discrminationatory and hateful laws designed to keep BIPOC and LGBTQ+ folks from going to Florida. However, the plan backfired and now they're lying to LatinX that the new laws "have no teeth" and not to leave! Can't have it both ways folks!

Why do folks come to the US: An interview with a Guatemalan immigrant. In this episode, Franki and Oscar interview a young Guatemalan man who emigrated to Newport, Oregon when he was a young adult. We asked him why he decided to leave his family to come to the US, how he got here, his border crossing and travels, and how he's doing in Newport, Oregon.

Franki and Oscar discuss (and some ranting) about the weekend ending on May 7th where in a matter of a few days, a street performer gets headlocked and died while two others hold him down, then there a mass shooting at a Texas mall, and then on Sunday the 7th, a man drives his car into a group of Venezuelan immigrants killing some of them. We talk about the politics in Texas, and the lack of humanity being shown by some politicians and followers who see it as their patriotic duty to kill people of color. And we ask the important question, how can we claim our humanity?

In Episode 14, Visas, Immigration and Asylum Seekers, Oscar and Franki discuss how folks become citizens of the US. They talk about some of the more common types of visas, DACA, and the immigrants and asylum seekers waiting at the US/Mexico border hoping to come to the US when Title 42 expires next week.

Music is central to Latino culture and the passion demonstrated by some of the musicians is unmatched. They discuss some of the different types of Latino/Mesoamerican music heard in the US, and mention some of the premier Mexican artists past and present.

In this episode Franki and Oscar discuss learning a second or third language and the various models of language acquisition for children in school. They also discuss why Spanish is or isn't taught or spoken in some homes, and the difficulties learning a language other than the first one.
