Season 5, Episode 2 is a birthday offering for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—part tribute, part truth-telling, part “how do we keep going when the world is loud?”
This episode is built around two musical bookends that carry very different kinds of power:
Nina Simone’s song written in the aftermath of Dr. King’s assassination—often known as “Why? (The King of Love Is Dead)”—isn’t a “remember when” moment. It’s a live-wire lament. Nina doesn’t soften grief into something comfortable; she gives us the shock, the sorrow, and the moral urgency that follows when a prophet is taken out of the world. Her music holds the ache and the accountability at the same time, and it invites us to ask the question that matters: what do we do with our lives now that we know what courage costs?
Stevie Wonder’s “Happy Birthday” is a different kind of weapon—joy as strategy. Stevie wrote it as part of the movement to make Dr. King’s birthday a U.S. national holiday, turning celebration into pressure, and melody into a public demand for recognition. Where Nina’s song mourns, Stevie’s insists. It’s a reminder that honoring Dr. King isn’t only about memory—it’s about action, visibility, and collective will.
Between these two songs, I reflect on Dr. King’s life through a spiritual lens, including the Bahá’í teaching that humanity is one people—not as a cute slogan, but as a blueprint for justice. I also share why Dr. King’s way of living—his insistence on dignity, his commitment to nonviolence, and his refusal to dehumanize anyone—feels aligned with Bahá’í principles, even if he wasn’t formally part of the Faith. When you listen closely, his life sounds like unity with a backbone.
If you’ve ever needed a reminder that love can be disciplined, that unity can be fierce, and that music can carry a movement, this episode is for you.
