Happy Father’s Day!

My daddy had five before I came along in 62 that spring

So he had been through the excitement and everything

Had already gotten over the first time he heard somebody say

Daddy, daddy, I want to wish you a Happy Father’s Day!

For me the whole thing was really quite a major thrill

I didn’t carry him, didn’t go through the labor, still

I felt him in my heart and didn’t need the ultrasound to say

I‘d feel so proud to hear him expound Happy Father’s Day!

Never saw eye to eye with my old man till long after he passed

Till I learned what he gave, and I understood important things last

Not the toys or cash, like old paper in a fire they quickly burn away

But the joy that you get hearing your baby boy say Happy Father’s Day!

Now the boy has grown and like I said my daddy’s in the stars above

I don’t know if he can hear me all the same I’m sending out my love

And as I hug my boy and marvel at the fine young man he is today

I still get a tingle like the first time I heard him say, Happy Father’s Day!
