On the one hand, queer communities are more visible than ever. Pete Buttigieg, the openly gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is running for president, and the 2018 midterms ushered in an unprecedented number of LGBTQ elected officials at all levels of government. On the other hand, President Donald Trump has become more aggressive in pushing forward with banning transgender people from joining the military. It’s also a historic pride year, marking half a century since the revolution at a small New York City bar that started it all. On this show, you’ll hear from two Stonewall veterans who were there, and a filmmaker who chronicled the making of the LGBTQ movement before the uprising. You’ll also take a trip to Jacob Riis Beach, a historic summer haven for queer New Yorkers, where sun-lovers answer a simple yet surprisingly provocative question: What makes a queer space in 2019?
